Check engine light came on at start up, checked code found SPN 3031 FMI 2 OC 1 which says after treatment DEF fluid tank temperature.
My question is can just the sensor be replaced, cleaned, or do you have to replace the complete def head? Cumming 6.7 Thor Tuscany 40 EX 2013 year model. Any advise would be appreciated.

Take it to a repair facility that works on the chassis. DEF is part of the emissions control and it should have a federally mandated 5 year warranty.

Is there a heater for the tank? Is it working? I am far from a diesel expert but I understand DEF gets slushy in the cold temperatures we have been experiencing.

Not sure about a heater but would think there is cause I have been in some 13 degree weather with no issues until this came up. I would think at 13 degrees def would freeze without some heat.

So why not investigate the possible cause of the temperature code instead of assuming a sensor is bad? That's what they did at 3 mile island - assumed the indications were faulty.

Good advise however since the code appeared the weather has warmed up for several day and when checked still had the fault. I thought the same thing cause when we left the weather was warm and no code when it got cold around 30 degrees we had the code.

Did you clear the code? In a lot of cases the codes don't just disappear.

OTOH maybe the temperature requirement still has not been met? The Interweb says the DEF ideal temperature is above 54 degrees Fahrenheit

On my 2020, Freightliner replaced the entire DEF head when I got a similar code. I imagine if you can buy the correct sensor that can be replaced. If not then the entire DEF head which isn’t cheap.

The def temp sensor isn’t a stand alone sensor, meaning the whole def header needs to be replaced, the header consist of the temp sensor the def quality sensor and fluid level sensor.
Before you replace the header assembly, check the wiring harness that runs off the def tank .

Yes there is a heating system inside the def tank and it uses the hot coolant from the engine to warm or thaw the def fluid when the temp sensor detects a “freeze point” .
Everytime the ign is turned that systems goes through a self test and if any sensor is faulty you get the fault code.

. Same question. Looking for a) DEF system schematic and operating diagram, for the part numbers, etc, and b) YouTube on replacing the sensor and check valve, both of which have been cited as problematic causes for the code.

Hope you get an answer, I have not found any part numbers or any other information so far. I did clear the code on mine and it has not returned yet.
