excessively short timeout period is killing me

I'm not certain of the length of the "inactivity timeout" in these forums, but it is certainly too short for an old man like me.

Today I spent maybe 15 minutes composing a reply in a thread. When I clicked Reply, I was asked to login again, so I did. Then, nothing but a blank screen here: https://www.thorforums.com/forums/newreply.php?do=postreply&t=28280

If I'm alert, I will remember to copy my reply so I can paste it back in after the re-login. Today I wasn't alert, so now I have to start composing my reply all over again. Yes, I know that I can hit Preview every 5 or 10 minutes to reset the countdown timer, but that also requires awareness on my part.

My browser is the latest Chrome, but I've had the same thing happen in Firefox.

Questions:
  1. What harm would there be in extending the inactivity period to 20 or 30 minutes?
  2. Is there a bug in the forum software that causes the blank screen?
  3. Other than copy/paste, is there anything I can do to recover after that happens? The back button is ineffective.
  4. Why can't you drop a cookie on my PC so I can stay logged in forever, like Amazon does?

It may sound like I'm bitching, but really I'm just looking for a better solution.

On the login form, underneath userid and password, is a "remember me" checkbox that will drop a cookie and remember your login. That should clear up this issue. (No idea about the blank screen.)

^^^exactly what he said^^^ Had the same issue for a long time then did this...now every login. I think it prevents you from writing novels. I just wish the little box had another option..."remember me all the time".

On long posts, I will sometimes compose it in WordPad, or any text editor. When finished I copy/paste into the forum.

yeah....I hate that about this forum too. I don't like using the cookie thing, or otherwise letting the browser remember passwords etc....
and honestly on more than a few occasions this issue has made me stop using this forum.

Two years ago I never ever ever had to log into the forum after my first time...until a month or so ago.

Maybe a marketing thing.
Maybe
'Hey! Look how many log-ins we get in a day!'

Still don’t login every day and nothing changed. Check your system

I don't remember the last time i logged in, many months ago

Tapatalk is an option as well

Same on Windows 11 desktop

Rarely, a browser update will clear cookies. More likely, someone being helpful will suggest that you "clear your browser cache" in order to fix an issue with a site, and if you use the default options it will clear cookies too. The connection might not be obvious (the broken site starts working, you go on your way) but then you'll have to login again at other sites. If you're like me, half the time when I do have to login, I forget to check the "remember me" checkbox... :)

For those that are choosing to not store cookies in order to be tracked less, there's no real point in that anymore as there are other, more reliable, ways used now as the primary means of tracking you. Google "browser fingerprinting" if you want to know more.

May I also suggest you use Word or Word pad etc., to compose … even use your email app to compose your input message … then copy / paste (Ctrl c / Ctrl v) into the forum reply box? Then hit Submit reply ... about 10 seconds.

If you don’t like Google tracking … may be try DuckDuckGo.com for searches?

DDG browser blocks 2 trackers from the Thor Forums on my system. It blocks Google ads and Ad Thrive.

If I take too long, I get the same thing. I have leaned to go back one screen, copy it, and log in. Then go to the topic again and reply and paste it all back in and post.
