Generator Oil Change

I’m sorry, I’m still stuck on Lt Keefer owning the same coach for 15 years.

What's wrong with that? It was perfect for our needs, had plenty of room for the 2 of us and our dogs and the only shop time it ever needed was at Discount Tire. Biggest plus, it was paid for.

Let's ask;

Can anyone post any significant percentages of oil related failures that caused real damage...
In Let's say the last 20 years..?

Post it or realize you've been duped by the oil and advertising agencies
IN THE 1960'S.

No failures certainly does not mean no oil changes.
It means to rerealize life and start thinking for yourself a bit.

Post 'em up.
I sway easily.

I think somewhere on the web there was Study that says at every 3001 miles interval or 2.6:1 equivalents ratio to engine runtime; 92% of all engines have failures due to lack of oil changes. The study states that while all of the engine failures are not catastrophic, these failures result in poor performance and unhealthy emissions and pollutants in the atmosphere.

I hope this is adequate to sway you. :whistling:

We'll have our 24.1 for 15 years unless it's totalled.
Current Avalanche was bought in 2005
current zr2 blazer is a 2001 owned since 2006.
Owned the Cunningham clone corvete for 20 years.
Bravada for 13 before those.

I never want to read or hear about climate change or mining from anyone without a car history of at least 10 years ownership per vehicle.

I'm the 'real' green guy.
Consider that this Thanksgiving when hippy niece says something about her Leaf car.

Our Old Navigator is 2008. It is in pristine condition except the rear camera went out ( blue screen). It is due for oil change, but based on this thread, I may forgo and instead go drain all of the oil out, remove the Fumoto valve and put the oem drain plug back on, then pour the used oil back into the engine. Next time I change oil in the new one, I will have the Fumoto valve put on the new one for future.

In the meantime, I may switch to 2 year intervals on the cars and just ensure oil is being topped off. My mindset in the past is that if auto oil level was low, it was time to change oil if it was near one year. With thought, I realize I add oil to the genny all the time.

We don't have any EV vehicle yet. I hadn't even seriously looked at one. My brother has a EV truck and he was wanted to go get a car from my Mothers house to bring back to Dallas to sale, but he had all kinds of trouble trying to plan the trip to ensure he got power etc. So he just gave up and drove his car. I am looking to take the RV to go get the car

I read somewhere on a dealer site the rv ownership is roughly 7-10 years. I thought to myself at the time that I hoped I got to keep my coach for 10 years.

So to see you all having the same coach for longer than 10 years is inspiring! I certainly didn’t mean any offense to having a coach for 15 years.

An RV is just like anything else, keep it serviced, clean and repaired when necessary and it will last a long time. I know some of the snootier 'resorts' have age restrictions but you'll not catch me in one even if I had a brand new Prevost.

My wife and I were out by the motorhome the other day talking over the fence to our neighbor. He always compliments me on how shiny the motorhome is. My wife said I'm obsessed.

I took that as a compliment! :coolsmiley:

Gas 150 hrs or annual, Diesel 500 or semi annual

The 4000 is gas so the diesel does not apply.

But diesel generator oil changes vary by model and can range from 150 through 500 hours and can also be an annual requirement.

I have an Onan Diesel 6000. Onan recommends changing the oil every 150 hours and I have changed it (myself) 150-200. Interesting that last time i had my Cummins diesel serviced (every 15K) I asked for a quote on changing my generator oil and filter. I got a estimate of $210. I declined and did it again myself though it's getting harder to crawl around on the ground. Oil and filter cost was $40.

The last time I had my Onan 6000 serviced they charged me $500. I'll never darken their door again. The previous time I had it changed (by a Mobile RV Tech) I purchased all of the needed things and he charged me $75. Probably less than $200 total... I don't remember for sure.

I keep my stuff for many years. I still have my first car. A 1961 MGA I bought in 1972 when I was in high school. It's now a vintage race car.

Anyway, regarding generator oil changes, since if I don't write it down I'll never remember if I did or didn't. And if I do write it down I'll forget where I wrote it I do this:

An added note.
Many qg4000 dipsticks are incorrect.
This is a known problem.
That engine doesn't care much if you're over or under a couple of ounces.

You'll only find out if your dipstick is incorrect after you change your oil using the 1.6quarts.
Then check.
It might say you're low.

There is no longer any web Info I can find about this.
It was scrubbed
Or i am weak.

Three 17ounce shots from the pictured device is almost exactly the right amount for a cq4000

I do that too on all my vehicles under the hood. But I use the poor man's labeler - blue tape and a Sharpie.

I change mine every 50+/- hours. My newest one is the QD3200...super simple and never have to get underneath it. My previous was the QD6000...lots of on your back grinding with everything recessed...but I still did it every 50 hours.
