On my Thor Vegas, USB port near the front radio, I plugged in my phone and smoke started coming out by the display. I pulled out the plug before my phone was affected but it fried my cord. I need to get the tray on the dash off so I can look at the wires behind the radio area but do not see how to do it. every thing on the radio and camera display still is OK.

Six screws/nuts on the back side.
Your best bet is to have a stereo shop do it.
You'll be laying on your back, arched over the doghouse reaching over your head blindly...six times to remove...6 times to replace.

In the 4 corners of the dark color panel there is probably 1 #6 screw attached to panel and flat washer and nut holding to dash remove the nuts. I had to use a deep socket to grab nut that is finger tight. Coming in from each side, hope you are flexible

Are you sure your cord wasn’t the problem

Somewhere in the 100's of my signature thread is the auxiliary usb and 12v ports in installed in that silly cubby hole under the ac controls.

There are hundreds of choices of add-on usb ports on amazon.
I have recently purchased the pictured ones.
I'll suggest these long before I'll suggest removing/re-installing that damnable panel.

The top picture is my favorite
The bottom picture is the easiest

OK I found the photo I took while under the dash of my Axis. I made some notes, it looks like there is a funky port adapter that plugs into a standard USB port. You could just unplug that, and plug a (nearly fully charged) phone in to see if it gets access to Apple car whatsits or Android Auto. If it does. I would forget the USB port on the front, buy a wireless Android Auto adapter and use it to connect to your system.

The USB port of that system was not sufficient to charge my phone AND use Google maps, my podcast apps, etc. so I pulled one of my 12v cigarette lighter plugs and replaced it with a USB Power tap. I charge my phone while driving or my Chromebook while using the passenger seat desk. Pretty handy. I attached a wireless Android Auto adapter to the infotainment USB port and it works great without smoking the port because it is drawing too much power.

I put a short explanation in a YouTube video. I hope it helps.
