Just brought her home

Hello All,

Joined the forum last week and brought home our trailer (first) an hour ago. All went well with the PDI. I used the PDI form in documents and was glad I had it. Only a few minor cosmetic things such as staples, molding problems. All taken care of.

We will be going on our maiden voyage in two weeks to Fort Bragg, Ca (about 5 hours away). Maybe a quick two day stay nearby first.

Quick question: we were told that the weight distribution brackets that attach to the trailer frame do not need to be tightened down tight. When I got it home they were very loose. Loose enough I could just pick them up. I know the tension keeps them on, but is this Normal?

When I had a WDH the brackets that place tension on the bars were tight on the frame with a bolt. Your correct that they will tighten when hitched up but mine were solidly tight even when unhitched.

Mine look loose, but are snug enough to keep them from wandering. However, as you said, the TT never moves without the WD bars attached, and the downward tension keeps them in place. I think the screw is just to keep in in place so it's there when you need it. I'll appreciate the opinion of others, also.

We just upgraded from a popup to a 5th wheel a few weeks ago. I kind of consider this our "first" as well because it's so different. I've learned a lot hanging around this forum while researching and of course now that I have some post-purchase questions.

I installed my Equalizer, and tightened those b''''es down about as much as I could.

Yes, the weight bars pull down on them, but you don't want those brackets "walking" when you turn or being loose.

Lookup hitch manual for torque ratings on the bracket bolts.

We have a 26RB. We love it. Have taken two long trips, the last one was our post-retirement trip. We were in the camper 36 days. Very comfortable. We have a Reese round bar wd sway control hitch. We did have problems with bolts that hold the cam bracket in place. They fell out on a rough I40.

Thanks Richard for that info. I tightened mine today but they recommend not tightening too much. That leaves it a little loose I found out after going for a test drive. I'll keep an eye on it. I had to adjust my drum brakes also, but everything else seems to be good. Got the trailer about half set up. Looking forward to getting it out.

The instructions that came with my Reese said to tighten the snap up bracket bolt until it makes contact with the frame and then tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn.

Thanks Hondavalk. My WD is a "Curt" and it says he same thing. Its still a bit loose but not as much we'll see,if it stays put.
