Michelin's or G614's

Well I'm stuck I run Michelins on everything I own but when ordering my 36FL I found out that the factory puts Goodyear load range E marathons on ( I am really wandering why) these tires do not have a good track record. I looked at the xps rib Michelin tire and the Goodyear G614 up grade from the factory, to buy these tires on the open market are almost the same price, I understand the G614's have a higher load rating they do not have a very good reliability record ( they tend to blow out). The Michelins are a load range E so they will only have about 150# 's of extra payload per tire so there is little room for improper loading, they have a very good track record but they are expensive for a load range E tire, the G614's when ordering from the factory are less expensive. So what tire should I choose?

I have read on other forums that many folks have had very good experience with Michelin XPS Ribs. I have also read that if you keep the proper air pressure in the Goodyear G614's that folks get very good service from those tires also. I think the air pressure issue is a big cuplrit for any tire. If the pressure gets low for the load you are carrying, the tire will builf up heat and cause bad problems with blow outs.

I am like you in that I have always used Michelin tires on all my vehicles for over 25 years and will probably lean towards the XPS Ribs when it comes time to replace the Goodyear G614 on our Redwood 36RL.

When you replace the good years with the michelins won you worry about being so close to the maximum tire rating with michelins?

My understanding is the early G614 had some problems, but many on the Montana Forum, including us have switched to them and have had no problems. We have about 20K miles on ours and running at 100 to 105 psi. It may be folks trying to use the GY load charts and ending up with too low a pressure. You have to keep enough pressure in them so the can do their job. Our RL that is on order will be fitted with the G614s as I would dare pull it off the Dealer lot on the Marathons. The Redwoods are toooooo heavy for the Marathons and I don't understand why they put them on.

KR2011,

When it comes time for me to replace the Goodyear G614's, if the Michelin XPS Ribs don't have comparableload capacity to at least the G614's, I will have to consider what is availableat the time. Hopefully, I don't have to worry about it for about 4 years. Manyfolks seem to be saying thatthe trailertires should be replaced as early as4 1/2years andno more than7 years of age irregardless of the number of miles. We plan to do a lot of traveling the next 2 to 4 years, so, I may have to replace my tires earlier just because of wear.

Well I will have to see if I can change my order and get the G614's, hope it's not to late.

Don't forget to check the pressure range of the rims you might be surprised

I'm with you guys, I love the Michelins on my tow, but I've never had any problems with the Good years yet. With that said I'm a nut for tire pressure and check it very often. I wonder if the average person that has had problems had not been at tuned into their tires as I had.

It's not too late...I ordered my trailer before you and just yesterday I upgraded my axles. If they haven't started building it yet, it's not too late. Although we might drive our dealers a little crazy

I can tell you that of all blow out repairs we do at my shop are from the good year marathon but the g614's come in second place for blow outs. You are probably correct in saying they do not check there pressure.

The factory says the rims are the same for the E's and G's.

Someone had said before that the rims were different, and then I heard the the difference was the metal valve stems were on the G rated tires. If we have problems with what ever they put on then the company will have to stand by them. I've never heard of rims blowing up anyway.

The rims don't blow but the tire bead can blow past the rim bead lock or the valve stem can blow if they use the rubber stem.

I can tell you for a fact I am driving my dealer nuts and that's for sure

I guess they have to earn their money! Picking out my trailer is like picking out a new wife....I'm kind of picky because she has to last a long time....... do her job well......bring a smile to my face.

I can't afford to do this often.

For the record, I've been married to the same woman for almost 34 years...so I'm not good at change.

I know if we end up with a Redwood 34SK when our trailer sells I will drive it from the dealer to the closest Discount Tire and have a set of BFG Commercial load range E LT tires installed and get what I can for the Marathons. I went through this with the cheap china tires that came on our PP that did not last 5k miles. Our trailer weighs 12,500 loaded andwe have had the BFG for over two years now and they still look great and no issues (knocking on wood). Our trailer has factory aluminum rims with metal valve stems. I also run a HawksHead TPMS and it will go to the new trailer.

I my self do like change , but not in the wife department ( I here that can be more expensive than changing trucks every 3 years). I do think it will be quite a while before we changes homes again. We are really impressed with the redwood, we se for sure when we finally get it.

I'll put some type of monitoring system on mine as well

Dave, a lot of people are very surprised when I tell them the tire temps and pressures I see on our trips. A TPMS is a good investment in my book know matter what brand or load range tire you run.
