New guy question about towed vehicles

I have seen several names used for towed vehicles with toad being the most common. Is there a difference in them or are the names just variations of the same thing. Any towed vehicle. I'm new to RVing and want to learn the lingo. Thanks

Well there is "four down" - just a tow bar to a vehicle in tow. There is "four up" - which indicates on a trailer. Finally there is "two down" or on a dolly. The bigger coaches tow "stackers" (double axle or triple trailers with second floor for toys or another car).

Thanks for your reply, Beau. So a "Toad" is just a reference to any array of towed vehicle, correct?

I guess so. I am sorta new to the tow group. The previous class A was only 22 ft so we had no need to tow anything. Now we tow about 50% of the time. I use a dolly since I three different cars/truck which are to old/different to be fitted with a tow adapter.

Yes: "Toad" is any vehicle towed behind the motorhome.

Big Al, We just finished our first extended trip towing. Having a vehicle besides the RV was a major enhancement. Grocery runs, out to dinner, side trips, etc. We saw alot more stuff more conveniently.

"toad" or "dinghy" are the two most common references I see to a vehicle towed behind an RV...
"Dinghy" appears to have come from the marine side - a small boat towed along... "toad" I would only guess is a play on "towed"..
