He uses who he uses, happily.
As do millions upon millions of people.

I know of a guy who won't eat at any pizza place these last 30 years due to a rumor of an employee 8 states away spitting on a pizza.

You recommend to use these places and I recommend against them for high end vehicles particularly. What’s the problem?

I won’t mention the name because they may be a first class operation now but it was in Mesa AZ about 15 years ago.

It wasn’t a Tbird, it was a custom 2 door post

I worked in a nationally known fast lube for 4 years. Indeed it is a crap shoot based on the quality of work some perform (or not). Some are top-notch with experienced techs; some not so much.


If you find one and continue to see the same familiar techs over time (like years), that's usually a quality shop. Sloppy performers don't last in that industry due to the cost of claims for blown engines and such.

I changed it myself and installed a Fumoto valve for the next time. It should be a snap next time using the Fumoto, according to everything I've heard. The only issue I had was my oil fill cap just spun and wouldn't come off (after I had emptied the oil (yikes). A very mechanical RV savvy neighbor helped me and we got the cap off.

Make sure your cap comes off first before you drain your oil. Sometimes they fail from what I found out (and witnessed).

I just had mine changed at the local (40 miles away) ford dealer. They charged me about $45. Might be a bit more expensive than a jiffy lube but I’m trying to build a relationship with them. They found a leak in my leveling system and are working with the warranty company to fix.
I’d rather spend a couple extra bucks and get to know them.

Also - jiffy lube may be cheaper but the ford dealer has a 14’ door!

I have only had it changed twice, both times I used a Ford dealer that did fleet service also.

I did the first and all of them since around the 5,000 to 6,000 mile range. I've got 27,000 on my 2018. Although the oil doesn't really wear out so much like it used to, it does get contaminated by fuel and dirt over time so that is my comfort zone for oil changes. Some will do it more often while others will push it well beyond.

As for the quick lube issue, bad service and/or mistakes happen even in the so called "high end" establishments. And as for quality, the quick lube facility where I have my cars serviced offers high end Wix filters at an additional cost but I use the stock replacement. I do use high end air filters though. Stopping the influx of dirt is far better on the motor than catching it after it's been ingested by the motor and trapped in the oil filter IMO.

It really doesn’t matter where you go. I owned 5 automotive service centers and have had a few oil outs. Some of them where from my best techs having a bad day. All dealers, shops and DIY’s have had the problem. Now I use truck stop shops to change the oil on my 8.9 and always use full synthetic.

I know lots of folks wouldn’t consider changing their own oil but the Ford V10 in a motorhome is hands down the easiest vehicle on the road to do. There’s lots of ground clearance for easy, jack-less access and the oil drain and filter are in plain sight with nothing hindering access. If you put a Fumoto valve on the drain you can use a short hose for a drip free drain that doesn’t even need a wrench to do. You will make a bit of a mess with the filter but if you put a large dog training pad under your catch pan it’s easily controlled. Buy your oil in quart bottles and you can do the whole job in about 20 minutes. Also easy to grease the few (9, I think) required grease fittings on the front end. You can do a full synthetic oil change with a premium filter for about $40 and have the satisfaction of knowing it’s done correctly. I don’t do my cars anymore because they are all too low to the ground and hard to access but I don’t hesitate to do the RV.

Please think of some of the posts we see and think of the guy who can't find a way to get under his MotorHome (we never did get an explanation of what the hold up was) , or someone who doesn't have the space to do a change.

Those people are in no way eligible for a do it yourself.

If you didn't change your own oil, where would you go?

I was going to start doing my own oil changes. I decided saving $800(10 changes at $120 vs your $40)bucks over the next ten years didn't have any value to me.

I’d use my local Ford dealer. I understand many won’t work on RVs but mine does and they’ve earned my respect with other work I’ve had them do.

Our Jiffy lube fits our RV, although we can't pull all the way in. They also will do generator oil changes.
