Onan 4000 QG problem

My Onan 4000 QG will not run. It just sputters. I have discovered that the spark at plug is barely there. At first it is bright but after 3 seconds it will go dim and shut off. Is it the coil?

Hello, I have attached the Onan 4000 manual, at least the one I have. I am no expert on generator issues but low oil can cause the generator to not start as it is a built in safety.

Based on your post it has spark. Is the fuel pump working?

Generator oil topped off?

Prime well, then try again.

Thanks, I had a bad head gasket, low compression. All good now!

Best suggestion is to go on U Tube and search your model number. I found a site that really helped me solve my problem, it was my fuel pump and filter, but some tutorials will take you through the whole process of troubleshooting your unit. Saved me hundreds of dollars and will you if you are the least mechanically inclined.

Fuel pump, fuel pump, fuel pump. OR fuel filter, fuel filter.........bla bla. OR dirty carb............Sputtering is a sign of fuel starvation. Not a spark issue. IMO
