Schwintek overhead bunk

I have a 2020 Thor wind sport 29M with a bunk over the cab. It is a schwintek . It has been making some clunking noise ever since I’ve had the RV, about a year ago.

the pin on the passenger side, sometimes falls out while driving and the bed will lower a tiny bit, but on this last trip, the passenger side fell about 5 inches so the bed was way out of alignment. I managed to get it leveled out by pushing on it while running it from my phone underneath it.

I went back-and-forth a few times until it leveled out , I got to come down even and was able to use it for the last trip, and before we left, I was able to get it up by pushing on it while running the motors.

When lowering it will run a few inches and then drop a few inches. This leads me to believe that the spur gear has some broken teeth on it. I took all of the covers off of it while we were on site at the last campsite and found the motor was mounted between, a top and bottom bracket which seemed very difficult to get out.

I think it’s a repair I could do if I could get this motor out and obviously back in. Has anyone tackled this repair and have any details on how to get that motor out of there ?

I found this video and it is helpful, but I still don’t feel confident that I could do this job based on the information in that video.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Rick

I don't know if it the same or similar to the one in this thread. But anyway, here's another video that might have some useful info.

In my Hurricane 29M, the overhead bed always drops down on the pins. It has since new. You didn't say, but did you resync the motors after you got it even?

I ran it up and down a few inches at a time until it was hitting the top together and then held the button for a few seconds. I didn’t put the controller into override mode.

Since it drops a few inches at a time when it is running I didn’t run it back down yet. I had to get home. I am pretty sure the spur gear is broken on the drivers side if. It not both sides. There are metal shavings below both sides but no actual big chunks. I am hoping to be able to get the bracket apart that holds the motors to get access to the drive shaft and the gear.

When at the campground I took all the trim off and took the bolts off the top bracket which still didn’t give enough access to get the motor out. I put it all back together to get it home.

Had a recent problem with a slide with these motors not doing full in and out, with random stops. RV tech said get it to either all out or all the way in then hold for 20 seconds to do a complete reset and synchronization: it worked.

One of your gears has a missing tooth or teeth. I know I've had exactly the same, it needs a new gear fitted to the motor. Do able, but not easy....

That’s what I think too. Would you mind sharing any information or tips on getting the motors out, and of course back in? Did you get the replacement parts from Lippert? Did you replace the entire motor or just the gear?

Hi. I bought mine from Amazon, x2. Postage was a killer for me being in Ireland, but you'll be fine, about $25.
OK, so here goes. It takes 2 to do, really.
1, remove al the trim including the long trim and ladder brackets.
2. support the whole bed so that you can undo the screws that hold the bed structure to the motor lift assembly.
3. you'll see the screws that separate the motor assembly, undo them, but make sure you keep the bed support cable taught. I did it by jamming a towel between the cable and the wall.
4. There is a release screw under the motor, unscrew it, and unplug the connector. That will
release the motor.
5. pull the motor out releasing the shaft and gear mechanism.

It's important to remember the sequence of the motor, shaft and spacer as there's a way there must go.
So, basically, do that, fit the new gear and assemble as above in reverse. Good luck because it's a bit of a fiddle.

I hope this helps.

You're very welcome. I looked at videos and there were none. It was a bit daunting, but it's do able. Just take a deep breath and go for it, with a little common sense, its not the nightmare I thought it might be. If you have any further questions, just ask, I'll answer if I can.

We have two months until our next trip so I went out this weekend to get a closer look at everything. I had lowered the bed onto the pins after raising it fully to the top last time, once I had it synced up again. This is something I normally had not done, which is why I think the pins fell out, because they weren’t in their tight enough,

I raised it up to the top to get the pins out and then lowered it to its lowest position and back up a couple times.

it still makes a clicking noise, but I did not have any drops in those two up and down cycles. I suspect there is some damage to my spur gear, but now that I have it lined back up, it seems to work decent enough. I think I will take our next trip and see how it goes before I actually tackle this job.

It is hard to believe that there are no good videos out there to go through the whole job, the one I have attached to this post is decent but he never really showed you the details.

Did you actually change your motors or just the gears and how did you find that exact part replacement on Amazon?

Hi. Yes, you can continue to use, however, it will fail and, as with us, it will fail catastrophically and when you're away. So, I'd recommend that you replace the gear in the comfort of your own property with all the tools at hand. I didn't replace the motor, just the gear and I just search, 'Lippert gear' on Amazon, I bought a pack of two for $25 if I remember correctly. You need to know the number of teeth, 16 I think. I didn't know until I removed the gear and counted them. I'd count them to be sure for you, however I'm in Spain at the moment and the spare gear is in Ireland, I'm not back until mid October.
I hope my explanation will help, as you say, there's no proper videos on how to do it.
