Stairs making a hammering noise when retracing

Anyone have this one before? Our stairs are moving in and out all the way, but all of a sudden they are making a hammering sound when retracting. The noise stops after a few seconds, and it does sound gear related.

After we returned from our last trip I noticed our step didn't go all the way out. Although it did when I gently pulled on it. But now it's going in and out all the way, it's just making that loud hammering sound, which sounds like a bad thing.

I do have a video, but seem it's too large to upload.

Our RV is a 2017 Thor ACE 29.3

There are many moving & sliding joints in the steps. Being in such an exposed location they need regular (say twice yearly) lubrication. I prefer to use spray lubes that don't leave a greasy film behind. A greasy film will tend to hold grit and become a grinding paste.

The motor/gear set is broke. The motor stops on high current. But if you have a bad spot on the gears, they slip instead of stalling and the motor keeps going. Easy fix though; order this and replace it:

We had to replace ours last year so you're due on a 2017.

You're probably right. Do you think I need to replace the whole motor/gear assembly with something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BG2JCV4D/ref=ewc_pr_img_2?smid=A21IG5FZKZ9MYU&psc=1

Or just the motor in the link you listed?

Yep sounds like the transmission has a stripped gear. I am on my third motor and second transmission. Never step on the moving step; wait until it stops and locks into the in/out position.

My steps make a hammering sound when they need lube. I spray all the clear metal surfaces with brake clean. Then I spray all clear metal with a good dose of whatever spray lube was on sale last time I bought it. When I do this once a month like kwikee recommends they operate flawlessly.
