Starlink

This could be my T Mobile Mini Me

$50/mo is well within my radar and I might actually read some Starlink literature, but Amazon offer is on the horizon.

But just for fun... given that I have no real need for Satellite Internet based on how I used today. Here is my current path to a Starlink $50/mo plan as of 9/11/24

1. Amazon service not available or net cost cost more than Starlink
2. My real Home Internet (Fiber) with Spectrum that is $40/mo unlimited would have to have substantial increase i.e. $65 or more / month
3. I would setup the Mini Starlink to use at Home
4. I would have T Mobile at Home like it is today
5. I would have the option based on where traveling of carrying the T Mobile Home Internet, or Starlink Mini Service, or both
6. In the next few months, I learn that the T Mobile Home internet does work well with Starlink service and has very poor bandwidth
7. Over time, if the Starlink Mini Services proves to be reliable in the 100% of the areas I have always traveled, and used T Mobile over last 4 years.

To which if all of the above were true I could see leaving T Mobile Home Internet at Home and traveling with Starlink Mini.

Note: I assume the Starlink Mini does not require a dish or pointing of Antenna? If it does, count me out. I don't want to do anything. My T Mobile black box sits on a shelf and never moves even when we use at real Home it is in the RV wherever parked.

Ok, they even make 360 degree Omni Directional land antennas. I don't want to have fool with directions. No problem always pointing that little flat box North though. I guess it is technically a dish, but it is not a dish in my mind if that makes sense. I am still following the technology. But if I needed, I would buy one in a heart beat. Thanks :thumb:

I'm an admitted Starlink bigot..... one..... because I am a tech junkie..... and two.... the damn thing works great. After my trip to Alaska last year, I wouldn't live without it..... and being able to pause the service and it being prorated when you restart it again makes it a no-brainer.

As a matter of fact, I was going to sell my Gen 2 hardware after upgrading to the Gen 3 a few months ago.... but I decided to keep the Gen 2 hardware at my house in case we get hit with another bad hurricane or tropical storm that knocks out Internet and Cellular again for days or weeks. I have a 2000W Inverter and three 170Ah LiFePO4 batteries I kept out of my Super C before trading it in so if a storm knocked things out for days, I could set it up in minutes and at least communicate with people. The only caveat is I would need to activate the plan before the storm hits.

I also think adding the 50GB Plan to the ROAM options and people with the regular Dish hardware is a game changer. When there are times I might not activate the service when just camping a few days in a month, I wouldn't hesitate to activate the 50GB Plan if cellular is not an option or providing poor connectivity.

Gen 3 and Mini don't seem to be as particular with exact positioning. Even when it's reporting slight misalignment, it connects just fine and speed doesn't seem to suffer.

As Starlink upgrades the skybound hardware and pushes updates to the dishes, things will only improve. It's getting so now that you just stick the dish outside pointing up, plug it in and it works!

United Airlines is teaming up with SpaceX’s Starlink to offer fliers free Wi-Fi (Hawaiian Airlines has also linked up with the satellites).

In the mountains of WV... under some trees... overcast and constant drizzle... NO cell signal of any kind from "the big three" for at least 7 - 8 miles.

This is with the "slower" Mini, flagpole mounted about 15' above the motorhome roof.

Starlink Mini test from another location in mountains of WV near Seneca Rocks. The only cell signal around for miles is WiFi at a camp store about three miles away. If you live around here you either have a landline or nothing... or Starlink.

Follow-up on real-world tests. Very rainy here today with on and off showers with constant drizzle...completely overcast. Every campsite has canopy of trees with occasional small holes to see sky... definitely not ideal. Solar would be a no-go here... fortunately we have electric hookup. I think they haul in electricity by truck.

Works well enough to stream 1080p video. The caveat is about every 5 or 6 minutes it disconnects for about 15 seconds, then reconnects. That doesn't seem to affect streaming, as it probably buffers enough to get through the dead spot.

Of course phone calls and texting is a breeze.

Thunderstorm is coming shortly... Will test then to see what effect it has.

P.S. Brother-in-law is in same campground with Gen 3. He's getting well over 100 speeds... but getting very similar disconnect issues from tree cover, etc.

Uploading as I'm listening to thunder and rain outside the motorhome!

Through the storm. Lots of thunder... a little lightning and LOTS of rain. Starlink disconnects were more frequent and sporadic... not conducive to video watching, but doable - frequent buffering. Phone & text still worked okay.
