Steering Wheel Control Buttons Malfunctioning

On my 2023 Axis 24.1 I have the steering wheel control buttons on the right side of the wheel that controls, among other things, the radio volume up/down/mute and the cameras (photo attached). Press camera button once for rear, press again for right side and again for left side. Press the SRC button in the center and it returns to the navigation map or car play on the radio display. Up until last week this has worked perfectly for the past two years. On my last to drives when I start out I have no response from he buttons.....nothing. But about 10-15 minutes into the drive if I push the camera button everything works as it should. This has happened the last two drives. I can lift the button off of the steering which is attached with a strong adhesive backing. No wires attached so it is not hard wired to anything.
A call to Thor got me nowhere.

Is this possibly powered by a coin type battery that is getting weak, and the assembly comes apart further to access the battery?

Have any of you run across this problem?

Any ideas or insights is much appreciated

Chuck

That does not look like a Ford OEM steering wheel control.

Without further guessing I'd go to the Thor Owners Resource website and create an account with your VIN (if not already done) and look at your build sheet and radio manual to see what the source of those controls is. Then go from there - it may be wireless - most aftermarket controls are.

I agree that this is not a Ford OEM part. I have a Thor Owners Resource login and have used it quite a bit, but I was unable to find anything that addresses this specifically. Thor was not able to provide any guidance. What baffles me is that it magically begins to work, each time almost exactly the same about of time after w begin our drive. Before it worked as soon as I started the ignition and I would cycle through the cameras as part of my pre trip checklist.

I would check with the company that made the radio and look up your model. It looks to me that it just is a remote for the radio.

I have the same remote control on the steering wheel of my chateau 22b. It was no longer working and had a flashing low battery warning light. After changing the battery the remote still doesn’t work.
I can’t seem to find any info about this particular remote anywhere.

Did you ever figure out how to make it work?

Not sure you have the same steering wheel control that I have, but if so, the square control on the steering wheel is just stuck to the steering wheel. You can easily pop it off, then just pry it open along the crack that runs around the controller. I was a bit worried when I did it but it is quite easy. Then you will see a 2032 (?) coin battery. Replace it and put it back together and you should be good. You may be able to open it without removing it from the steering wheel. I pulled it completely off of the steering wheel because I was still winging it.

Just realized you said you changed the battery. What battery did you change? Was it the battery in the controller?

Hi,

Yes I did change the CR2032 button cell battery in the remote.
But the red led no longer lights up when I press a button.

Yes I did double check it with a multimeter. It reads just above 3V.

Is it is possible that it needs to be reprogrammed to radio head unit?

No one ever said what brand remote? Is it made by Radio Mfg ,or a 3rd party that works with the radio?

I have another brand of wireless Steering remote and I have had to reprogram it a few times when it lost the control codes for my Pioneer radio Usually related to if I use disconnect switch on chassis battery for some extended period of time. I actually need to try to reprogram again, because I just noticed that the Volume up button is actually turning radio down  All other buttons work fine.

In my case it was a simple battery change. It immediately starting working again with no problems since.

On my 2023 Thor Axis 24.1 I have the Axxera Radio, model AVM2210H. You can find your model information by going to settings and other on the radio screen. See attached screen shot of mine and attached manual. Maybe this is of some help.
