A update to one of my last posts about the Garmin and RV Life taking us to a 12’10” bridge even though they BOTH had my height
Loaded in them as 13’6”!
We got around it with no damage thank God …..but
The guy across the campground from us in a GD solitude was not so lucky….he didn’t realize it and drove under it …
Ripped both rooftop A/C off and both skylights too!
I felt so bad for him !!
He said his insurance , Stare Farm said pay the tech and send a picture of the invoice and they would direct deposit into his checking account…. Pretty cool to not have to fight your insurance company on top of everything that had happen.
He found a local mobile RV tech and the guy worked All day on it
He got two new A/C and one of the skylight installed. He couldn’t find the other skylight local so he installed a piece of plywood and sealed it up to get him back on the road.
They were on there first day of a three week trip around Georgia.
By the way they were Long time RV’ers not newb’s
Anyway it’s just a wake-up call to byus ALL **** happens !
Be careful

What Garmin?
What version map?
What road?

I got lost in my driveway trying to use RV Life. I know they are sponsor of this forum but that RV Life is the most worthless app I have ever seen. I remember once trying to use it and I was about 20 min outside of Dallas headed East and it mysteriously had me take an exit, which I did because I thought maybe it knew sent. It then put me back on I-30 going West back to Dallas. So knowing that was wrong I took the next exit to go back I-30 East. It got worst, I could NOT turn the damn thing OFF. I spent 10 minutes at a stop trying to turn it off to start a new, so I finally just closed the app. Turned out, I had to hook up to my PC to change the route

My Garmin has been great though.

Quite the story!
We were directed to pass under a RR bridge at 8'-6" in CT once- I knew it would not fit, and was quite a challenge to turn around with a car on my butt, but we managed. Would have ripped off the roof!!

GPS's often take friends in circles around our home when coming too- very frustrating, so I give them specific instructions before they come now.

I never got lost in the woods when I was a forester- imagine walking 5-10 miles/day in woods, back and forth and in circles to cruise timber, so I use my 'tools' of locating myself using aerial photos and reference points on the ground.

One time (1975 before keyfobs with alarms) my co-worker was 'lost' 100' from our truck (up over a height of land out of sight)- he thought we were a mile away from it. I let him go the way he wanted and I walked right to the truck and beeped the horn. He showed up and asked how I knew it was there- "I never lost track of it since we walked into the woods" I replied.

GPS is noce to have, but nothing like using landmarks to triangulate your position on the ground. So I use both. I use my iphone and can toggle from street to satellite views.

Like Mark said... use ALL tools at your disposal when in a strange area. Especially true in his neck of the woods where roads may have been designed and built before the automobile was invented. Rail underpasses come to mind.

Pre-trip I use Google satellite view on secondary roads. Just a quick scan for sketchy areas. En route I use a plain vanilla RV Garmin in addition to Google Maps. They rarely agree. But if I do my homework I always know why.

You must be taller than us. We physically measured after installing a second AC unit. 12’5”. Usually use Garmin 670 RV. Before leaving I compare with Apple Maps. 12’ 10” in center may not be the same towards the sides.
