Hello Everyone,

So I'm thinking about purchasing a Thor Indigo or Luminate.
I'm seeing a lot of awful reviews on the Thor products and am becoming very cautious of making the plunge.
If you have bought a new RV can I ask you for an honest opinion good or bad on your purchase or should I just stay away from a Thor.

thanks in advance

If you can build a house single-handed, from foundation to roof, wiring and plumbing, then you'll be ok, but busy. You need to know DC electrics too.
I have done all that plus having 40 cars and bike/ ski tech for 20+ yrs, and inventor for 7 yrs, so I thought I would be ok with a POS build. Sorta... lotta work.
Building a new house is easier. Nothing to un-do. Just as my brother's motto said- "Do it right".

Thor shoves these out the door with little or no QC, which I found out after owning another floor plan (Tellaro 20AT), so I decided to sell and get the one with the things I like (Tellaro 20L), and just rebuild it, which has taken me 2 yrs, and now thinking of re-doing the cabinets and tearing all apart to insulate as it is NOT insulated.

I've already re-wired mine, and added some insulation where I could reach.
Upper cabinets get very hot inside, so food has to go in cooler parts. Fridge probably works too hard too.
Mouse entry has been a big problem too- can't seem to find the one place left they are getting in...

Wrong screws, stripped, or just bad applications everywhere. Debris from construction inside compartments, etc etc.

So if you want something to use right away, avoid TMC coaches- and look at Coachmen or other instead. many problems with these rigs.
Aside from all that, I like the Promaster chassis of the class B RV.
But next time (if ever) I'd just get a van and make my own. Not rocket science.
Good luck!

We bought our 2021 Hurricane brand new in August 2020.
So according to some people we should be the most miserable motorhome owner out there for we not only bought a Thor but we bought a "covid build"....

So I'll tell you our story and then our take on this.
We had only one major problem which was the big wall slide system had to be replaced because the factory installed it out of Schwintek tolerance.
This was done at the dealer and under warranty.
Only other problem I can remember was the shower leaking which I fixed with a lil of silicone glue.
Motorhome is currently with 25K miles and works fine.
Prior to this motorhome we had two Rockwoods pull behind, Rockwoods are known for build quality and except for the slide issue, in terms of problems, i found this motorhome to be the same as the Rockwoods.

I do need to disclose that:
1 - We came from boating and we do expect things to break that we ourselves need to fix.
2 - The dealer I do business with is a small family owned business that do care to do a good PDI and fix things before delivering the motorhome .

So we would not let internet comments keep us away from Thor Products, to the point we are considering a Riviera 38RB as our next motorhome (yes, we should be lunatics for we like full wall slide  ).

We have seeing bad stuff in all brands including Tiffin, Newmar, etc but usually our experience is that when you find a problem the manufacturers do step up and fix it so in our humble opinion, most of the nasty thing you hear on internet are a combination of a build problem + bad dealer + bad owner...

Thank you for all your information.
So I have decided not to buy a Thor Indigo or Luminate.
They are both very well equipped, with the tank less water system, outside entertainment center, solar panels, fireplace etc.
You would get so much for your dollar when others have options for these items.

So I watched some you tube videos that were very negative about the Thors, one in particular was secretly filmed in one of the factories.
There were some things that were good but what put me off was the use of mdf throughout the coach also the extensive use of staples and not screws.

The walls simply are not put together well vs Winnebago, Entegra etc.
Thor does manufacture very good RV's under their other brands so I think I will pay extra to get those builds and peace of mind.

Once again thank you for your your informative responses.

Thor Industries is a very large corporation. Thor Motor Coach is not the only part of the corporation that manufactures motor homes . Each Thor MC plant has its own engineers, designers, production staff. salespersons and floor workers. Plant 750 manufactures the Luminate/Indigo along with most of the class A, gas, coaches 35 ft and under. Anything you hear or read about Thor MC is not relevant if the coach was not constructed in plant 750.

My Hurricane is my 3rd RV and second gas class A coach. I have no plans to sell the 8 year old coach. If it were wrecked today, I would buy another Hurricane/Windsport to replace it.

Beau388:

I think that there is a corporate culture at work that affects all Thor plants, although I am sure some plants are better than others, the high end models being better typically.

I saw this first hand during Thor’s disastrous acquisition of Livin Lite and to a lesser extent as a result of their acquisition of Tiffin.

So I believe that there are two tiers at work: the corporate and the model/manufacturing plant.

Thor is one of the worst for corporate culture but Thor’s Tiffen is one of the better brand/models. I don’t know where the Indigo/Luminate fits.

I do know that TMC is one of the worse ones. There were about a dozen manufacturing mistakes on my 2021 Axis that I was able to fix myself with little help from Thor.

As I said in my post I believe Thor does make some excellent gas A’s under other brands which I may end up purchasing.
The new Indigo and Luminate are very well appointed, they are built under the Thor brand but apparently I’m just not convinced they are are well built due to my observations.
These are just my opinions and I do not want to argue over them.
For you folks that are happy and have no issues with your Thor products then I am glad for you and wish you all happy Rving.

i was pointing out that all Thor Industries RVs are dealer ordered and paid for before they leave the factory lot. If you purchased the coach off the lot and it had any manufacturing defects, the factory missed them (QC does not check the water and holding tanks systems). The dealer also misses them doing the arrival checklist and also during the per-delivered checklist. Larger dealers like MHSRV insist that you spend 24 hours living in your coach before you leave the delivery barn and all discrepancies fixed (if parts are available). If you chose to leave before everything was repaired, you should have an appointment to complete the repairs.

Personal note. After 7 months and 6,000 miles using my new coach, the electric portion of the water heater failed. I was house shopping in San Antonio,TX and had planed to return to my home in Murray, KY. I decided to call MHSRV about 9 am to see if the could work me in the repair barn on my way home. The answer was if I could be there by 10 AM in the next morning, they would look at the coach. Alvarado is about 250 miles north, and easy drive. True to their word, they started on the coach about 9:45 AM and we vacated the coach to the cool maintenance shop with our two cats. 30 minutes later they said the coach was repaired (bad relay) and the found the dash power port fuse was blown and replaced it. I signed the repair form and headed home. That was the only repair the coach has ever needed except for the peeling upholstery, which I replaced.

Thanks Jim,

I assume you were satisfied with your buying experience with MSHRV.
Do they truly charge no other prep or admin fees as they state on their website?
I'm keeping an eye on their inventory and may just have to make a trip over to Alvarado.

I spent over 12yrs in San Antonio, miss the Tex Mex and friendly drivers:)

Thor was our first RV. 2021 Aria. I would say it was my learning RV. I know what to look for to avoid.

We drove a car from Murray to Alvarado (650) miles, spent the night in a local motel, and were at the MHSRV entrance at 8:30 am

Mitch Bennett was our salesman and took us to see several other coaches in our price range (under $100,000). Of course, we chose the one we had placed a deposit on. Since it had been three weeks after we agreed on a price and made the deposit, I found than MHSRV had reduced the price 2% . Things must have been really slow in January. I had taken time to get a temporary plate from KY so there were no fees of any type on the discounted price of $84,500 ($124,500 list). It took about an hour for the wire transfer to clear and we moved into the coach before striking out in the car to Camping World in Fort Worth to equip the coach for a trip back home. On returning to the coach, maintenance handed me a 100+ item arrival check list which was filled out and signed noting the 3 items than needed to be repaired. This was required by Plant 750 to document the production errors and provide the funds to repair the items. Second was their assessment of the coach with items found satisfactory. We were in the delivery barn with electricity and water for our delivery demonstration which I recorded fro review later.. Our delivery spot was three coaches to the left of the maintenance office. Mitch came by the coach twice during our stay to check that things were going well. It was nice to be able to walk over to the maintenance office and ask questions about the new coach. We actually spent two nights in the delivery barn, because there was so much to learn.

While the O'Banion's no longer own MHSRV they still manage it for the owners. I have dropped by four times to just spend the day looking. So far, I haven't found a reason to trade.

Technically we do not live in San Antonio but are in Blue Skies of Texas Village 5 miles west of the city, but still in Bexar County. Yes, the TexMex, Thai, seafood and Italian food is world class.

Short time after I purchased my AXIS 25.4 new I noticed the wood grain film pealing from the closet frame in the back of the coach, found more on the kitchen cabinets so I took it to the dealer, service manager said the only thing we can do is to replace the cabinets and you will not like the new ones if we replace them, he said the way these coaches are built you have to destroy the cabinet to get it out and then the new ones do not always fit right an he went on an on, said the coach could be in the service department for up to 6 months, I took it back home an next day took measurements of everything and started ripping out every cabinet front to back, I weighed everything as I took it out an kept a record, I built all new cabinets using 4 quarters red oak, all cabinets are stained and finished with a clear poly, all the door inserts are done with 1 X 1/8th oak strips in a basket weave design, this kept the weight down and when all said an done I had gained about 67 lbs in weight, next step was to recover the seat cushions in the dinette and I bought new foam for the bottom cushions, I used denser foam and it made a big difference, this last few months I pulled out both driver and passenger seat and took one apart and marked every thing and used the pieces as a template to cut out the new material, I learned upholstery work in high school auto shop, it was a summer program, time well spent, I live in Southern California and upholstery shops around here would get $1,000.00 or more to do just one seat, I looked on line for replacement seat covers, in some cases you could buy a complete new seat for what some of the replacement covers cost and I am not sure how well they would fit. without a doubt the quality of the coaches coming from THOR really suck and I am sure their quality will only get worse.

Bought new. Thor service was great.
Many Goodwill items

Although I’m getting ready to sell my FT A27, it’s not because it hasn’t been a great little unit. Yes, we had some water intrusion. Thor sent field techs out 5 times and fixed it. Dried it out. And recovered the wall. We had the Norcold fridge controller go out. Replacement from Amazon was a quick easy fix. Levelup jacks started leaking down in the Grand Canyon. One hour on the phone with Lippert tech support, tightened valve bodies, and were rolling again. We occasionally find a screw in the floor. Had to fix shower drain pipe. But we’ve been 23,000 miles through 30 states over the past 5 years. To be a big cheaply made cardboard box rolling down the road, it’s held up well. We only bought it for one big 3 month national park trip and the unit held up and performed admirably. I also pride myself in the challenge “I’ll bet I can fix this” whenever something out of the ordinary happens. We’re moving and medical issues no longer allow me to deal with this mode of travel. IMHO, for every complaint you read on social media, there’s probably 5 others who are enjoying their Coach. However, no matter what brand you buy, if you’re not handy with carpentry, plumbing, AC electric, DC electric, and mechanical repairs, don’t buy an RV. Stick to Airbnb’s.

We bought a new 2022 Thor Challenger 37ds a couple years ago. I have 9 service tickets so far. My last issue was the back up camera as the wire broke that went to the head unit. Thor refused to cover the cost ($6530!) under warranty as it had expired even though we had 3 previous documented issue/repairs as to the camera flickering/black screen. That's just 1 of many items that needed correcting. I would never buy a Thor product again.

We have a 2025 Luminate CC35. Several small items have broken and all have been fixed/replaced thru Thor warranty service. Only have 3500miles on it but so far we just love it.

Thors quality is piss poor an I doubt it has gotten better over the years an will only get worse with time, not sure if any of the other big name RVs are any better, all the wood work on the inside is plastic covered wood and will go to **** in less than a year, upholstery will self destruct in about 4 years and the gel coat and graphics will go to **** in less than 5 years, the Ford part of the coach is the only thing worth a ****, a lot of money to pay for something that will look like hell inside an out after 5 years, your going to spend a ton of money after you buy it just to keep it from going to pot, I would not buy another new one, look for a good used one in good condition an plan on getting rid of it after a few years
