Thor Sequence/Tellaro in cold weather

Got down to -6 in Indiana. Lost 120 volt. 2023 PM Tellaro 20L went down to O%. Awakened batteries and charging while driving, now up to 30%. SOH still showing 0. Lost 120 volt, so no receptacles, microwave etc. will it just come back on when fully charged? Fuses and breakers seem okay. On shore power using house 20 amp… slow charge (if any) on shore power. Best charge is by driving. Haven’t gotten it back up to 100% yet—-plan to drive more to fully charge.
Assuming you have UHG and no Onan generator as I do. I prefer no Onan- it's a POS and PITA, and I hate them anyways... no emission controls at all. Basically a lawn mower engine with an alternator. Then there's the lack of Cummins service centers- forget the dealer.

Anything below 32°F, and the batteries will run until they reach min. voltage, and the internal BMS shuts them off.
Then UHG needs to be on, (w/master switch on), or plug into shoreline to heat (RB100LT- 'low temp', is a heated battery) the batteries and recharge when they reach 32°. The UHG is a great design, but would be nice if there was an auto start for it.
You can to set a notification on your phone app (RVmaster) to tell you when voltage is low, so you can manually start the engine and get the batteries back.

You will not have 120VAC until the batteries are charged enough to provide power to the Combimaster (inverter) to make 120VAC. Possible that you might be able to use inverter with UHG running-would def. add time to charge the batteries tho... haven't tried that myself yet...
Assuming your 120VAC system is ok on shore power? If not- check the breaker panel, and GFCI on left end of kitchen sink cabinet.
Also if not grounded, can trip a supplying 15-20A GFCI source, which also needs to be properly wired.
Good luck!!

Thanks for replying. No, 120 doesn’t work on shore power or inverter. Plugged in to shore power, inverter turned off at monitor, no load and still dropped from 30 to 29 SOC. Batteries on BP screen both show about 13 v

GFCI showed a yellow light the other day, pushed to reset it and I think that’s when everything went. The GCFI is on the end of the sink island…is there another breaker panel other than the one on the passenger side near the bathroom?

You may want to do this mod someday- so you can access those compartments more easily. (Source: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B093PYVL2Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1)
I made my own tabs, but a fender washer might work as well. No more tools to get in!

Just those two spots for power to AC. GFCI and main panel. Other possibility is the 30A marinco plug wiring. I fried my hot wire off when I did a booboo in the back with wiring in a trickle charger. Pull off side of rig and inspect.

Sounds like you have a short, or disconnected wire somewhere. Time to go thru the rig and check all wire connections.

Check Transfer switch under drivers side headrest compartment aft of Combimaster - verify voltage inside (carefully)- open ATS case, plug into shoreline, and test for 120V. Cover just pops off- tabs on each side holding cover on.

Check Combimaster under headrest, driver's side- two screws at bottom- facing back, open end compartment and check tightness of terminals. Unplugged of course. Then plug in and test for voltage at 120VAC terminals. You can also test the battery voltage here too.

Unplug from shoreline for next steps.

Then check breaker panel for loose or disconnected wires on backside inside headrest area as well.

Could also be a bad GFCI outlet- it happens.

Check 250A ANL fuse and 50A resettable breaker and 5A fuses underneath (fun- not!!) last pic.

PM me for my email if you need more help.

Reply to old thread on insulation. Just pulled the covers off the rear van doors of 2023 Scope. Thor had 3 pieces of insulation 24 X 8 inches on the passenger rear door. I'm not done putting insulation in, but looks like it will take a little over 3 full batts of havelock wool to do one door properly. This is a promaster and lots of area on the two rear doors. It certainly can't hurt.

What they did back there is NOT insulation- I took out the mouse nest material they used and made it better- never mind the pathetic 1x1 framing for the rear wall- I improved that too before making a new back from 1/4" PVC and screwing it back in place.
(2nd pic is sideways of course)

We went to Niagara Falls last week and more problems with the Relion system in cold weather. The generator with Relion works great as long as temperatures do not drop below 30 degrees F. Below that, problems occur. I have had this happen before but decided to "test the limits" without success. Generator comes on normally and runs until the "click" of the transfer switch and then abruptly shuts down. This happened at 28 degrees. The Relion system is supposed to work to -4 but it does not on mine. Relion system is designed to heat the batteries for up to an hour.. and then allow charging. Doesn't happen on mine. Have had this happen also when plugged in. The system shows 5 volts on the display after shut down which makes absolutely no sense to me. The "fix" is to turn off all power to the Mastervolt and let the system warm up. Then all works normally again. I suspect something is going on with the BMS (Battery Management System) on the batteries that is shutting everything down. I have had to reset the breaker on the Onan 2800i also when this happened in the past. I will call Relion and speak with them if possible for suggestions. We don't use the van that often in these conditions but it is frustrating that you can't charge house batteries if temperatures stay below 30 degrees. We are normally in North Carolina so easy to work around this problem there but would not want to deal with this if spent several months in colder climates. I am tempted just to swap the expensive Relions to AGM's and change the settings on the Mastervolt. We like having the generator and it has worked without issue (when not freezing) and very quiet. We have a 200a/h system anyway and don't really need a lot of battery capacity with the generator.
Anyone see problems with switching out the lithium for AGM's and making the correct changes on the Mastervolt?

Things I have done to address a couple of your concerns.

It has worked out pretty well.
I don't have the same budget constraints as a thor engineer/product developer.

I spoke with Relion who stated they believe one or both of my batteries have a BMS problem and are going to replace them with new. Not looking forward to the install but at least their customer service seems helpful unlike Thor...

Yours is not the first set of ReLion batteries that have been replaced. Must be a batch of bad BMSs.

Agreed. We use it infrequently in cold weather but at least Relion "owns" the problem. The problem for me is just going through the hassle of removing the batteries from underneath the van and re-installing new ones. Not a totally simple task without having a lift having watched videos of the process.

Relion sent me a form to fill out and wants the serial numbers etc. of the batteries before they "approve" the claim. I understand that is necessary and not a complaint but just an observation that will take some work to get this approved.

Marks relocation of the batteries is probably the best plan but not sure I want to take that on/or loose the space under the beds.

I am tempted to take it to the RV dealer but not sure that I trust them enough not to mess something else up and be without the van for an extended time.

Also still considering just replacing with AGM since I have the Onan generator and don't really need a great deal of battery power. The generator has worked great for us so far and extremely quiet. The 200a/h system is very marginal anyway for running the Air Conditioner etc. Would think that should be pretty simple just requiring changes to the mastervolt settings (dip switches)?

By going to a dealer you'll spend an hours labor.
This is very well spent. I'd do it instead of messing with batteries and the space they're in.
Hit relion for the labor. They'll say no but hit them anyway.

And

You're not correct by any reasoning about going away from lithium.

IF you decide to do this yourself to save a bit of money.
Label each cable as they are now...
Take too many pictures then take too many pictures again.
Before you disassemble and as you disassemble take too many pictures.
