To sell out or donate

That is the question. House sold in 48 hrs. Have to be out in 30 days. A guy came over and offered a cheap price for our stuff but will haul everything away. Some items we have been able to sell on our own and honestly don't have that much valuable things left. We can't be the first ones facing this delima of selling vs donating. The beauty of his offer is that he hauls it off. You else had to make this decision and what did you do!

There might/should be a worthy organization (Visiting Nurses, Goodwill, etc) who possibly has a truck for picking up donations. Might be an idea.

We had a house/yard/garage sale, opened everything up & posted a sign "make an offer", between what our kids took & we sold we only had about 3-4 medium size boxes we donated to Goodwill. We left everything in the cabinets, on shelves, & in closets & that worked really well, we didn't mark a price on but just a few higher end items & surprisingly most people made fair offers.

We have friends going though the same process. They sold several items on Craigslist and donated much of the small stuff, clothes, etc. But then they had more time.

You asked for opinions, mine would be to take the offer, and don't look back! On to the next adventure!

Well, a sure thing is better than not. However, your donations are tax deductible and we donated so much it did help a bit with the taxes. Take pictures of everything that you donate, you can't remember everything that was in that box. It just takes a few minutes and I print them out later and save for tax time.

For us: Autos we sold. Stuff we thought was useless we took to the dump. Antiques & items that meant something to us went into environmental storage. Everything else, we gave away. David

We offered stuff to family and friends, followed up with a garage sale, which fortunately got rid of most of the big stuff like furniture. What was left over after the garage sale went to Goodwill/Salvation Army. Didn't mess with receipts since we don't itemize enough things to benefit from it. Besides, I've always looked at getting a receipt for tax purposes as diminishing the spirit of donating to worthy causes.

Our last items from the house were either donated to a co-worker's church that was gathering items for Native American reservation residents or left for the folks that bought our house. They really appreciated the lawn equipment and the Select Comfort bed. That bed was too big for the RV.

Take the money and be done with the hassle.

I started selling everything on Craigslist minus items we needed for staging the house. Once the house was under contract I put the rest of it on Craigslist. Anything left went to the Estate sale we had at the end.
