I started looking at the routing forour trip to Williamsburg, VA in 3 weeks. I would really like to avoid Washington DC on the Monday after Easter. Can anyone tell meabout US Route 522 between Hancock, MD and Winchester, VA? I don't mind pulling on2 lane roads, but are there a lot of stops (lights or signs) or hills? This adds about 45 minutes to my estimated trip time. That's not a big deal, especially if there is an accident anywhere on the Beltway !

Chris, Look at Rte 70 from Breezwood PA to Rte. 81inHagerstown MDsouth to Rte 64 East OR

Rte70 in Breezwood PAto Rte 695 Baltimore MD to Rte 97 to Rte 3/301 south to Rte 95 to Rte 295[ Richmond VA area] to RTe. 64 east. Rte 3/301 is a 4 lane 55 mph with some stop lights, which I always use when traveling south. It parrallels Rte 95, circumventing the Wash. DC area.

As for a campground, look at American Heritage RV Park...very nice.www.americanheritagervpark.com

I know this did not directly answer your question

Chris, instead of taking US Route 522 between Hancock, MD and Winchester, VA you can takeRte 70 from Breezwood PA to Rte. 81 as Walt has said and it will take you to Winchester, VA. If I am remembering correctly, the last time I was on 522 the speed limit was 40-45 and quite a few lights and a lot of police. Taking 81 to 64 will add a lot of time to your trip (been there done that). When we went to the Outer Banks we would take 70 to 270 to 495 to 95 and try to get through there before 5 am or after 8 pm. We have also gone 70 to 81 to 17 in Winchester to 95 in Fredricksburg.

We have also found out that it is not so muchthe traffic around DC, as it is the way others drive around there.

Hope this helps.

Man how did I miss that

. I used to drive from Pittsburgh to McLean VA all the time for work and remember passing I-81 while on I-70. I was planning to pick up I-81 in Winchester.

Walt, I am with you on your route until afterI get onto 3/301...where are you picking up I-95???

George, would you tow your 5er on Route 17 between Winchester and I-95?

I know how they drive around DC. Been there too many times. What concerns me most is not the driving, I can get in the right lane and be happy. It's more the fact that it is going to be the day after Easter and one accident/disabled car would eat up the amount of time it would take me to go around that area.

Yes I would. If I remember correctly 17 has a grass median between 2 lanes in each direction and in some places it is just divided by yellow line and still 4 lanes.

Chris, OOPS....look at the VA map....RTE. 301 goes past FT. A.P. Hill Army reservation [which is an overnight stop for me] and connects to Rte 207 to Rte. 95.

It is not as complicated as shown on the map. Just follow the "to 95" signs after you pass the Army post entrance.

Don't ya just love all the options you get here

That's just the reason that I posted here. Always moreopinions than you could ever need.

And someone has driven the road once or twice and can tell you if it's good for towing or not
