water filter questions

We just got our CC32bl up and running from storage in NY. We would like any opinions on water filters. We have seen smaller inline filters, and larger canister type filters. We have heard from several people on the advantages of having a water regulator valve and have on already, but want to make a wise decision on filtration. Can a canister type filter be installed easily in a permanent position? Lastly, would it be wise with any filter installation to use plumbers tape or is it a waste considering how often you may be breaking camp?
Any opinion will be welcome....

The filters are cheap also. Walmart use to carry them, but Amazon has them cheap too. Less than 10 bucks a filter if you buy the two packs.

I have the filters on subscribe and save so they're 15% cheaper.

This is the cheapest way to clear, clean tap water IMHO.

We just use the Camco in-line filter (hook it to the brass 90 fitting right at city hookup on unit). Just ordered (2) filters from Amazon. They last all season, and I just pitch it when closing up.

You can get the filter and a female/female hose adapter kit at Wal Mart for like $15.

I have been using the Gamco "Taste Pure" filter with charcoal. Comes in a two pack for less than $25.

There are cheaper alternatives for single stage filtering, i just had experience in a couple roadside rv parks with well water gumming up my carbon filter, so i went to a two stage setup.

It is a pain though to setup the filters as its one more thing to setup when we get to the our overnight destinations.

I guess if you set up for extended stays and it it's worth it to you, great. But as $12 apiece for the "Taste Pure" you can keep an extra on hand in case of such a problem.

And you're not like me in the pouring rain setting up in the dark trying to set up the filters in the muck outside. Still, I pay $6.47 and $8.27 for a two pack of each filter media. So , other than than investment in the filter frame, it's still pretty cheap...but.. I give here, the tastepure route wins..but where do you get these for 12 bucks? When I was putting together my setup, even Walmart was hitting us for 19 bucks a pop.

I bought one of the in-line wally world specials and took it back in 2 days. It wouldn't flow enough water to take a shower. It might be fine for the kitchen sink but at the faucet it didn't work for me.

All you need for a filter to take out some of the taste, is a charcoal cartridge, which you should be able to pickup at walmart or any other hardware store.
I buy the two pack at Farm&Fleet for $8 something.
I've used those out west where the water is nasty sulfur, and was able to clean it up enough that we were able to make coffee out of it.

These are the same units as the residential whole house water filters, except the hose connections are built in.

Some 5 years ago, they didnt sell the cartridge only units. After a couple summers, I had a small collection of the no kink hoses!

I've not had the same experience. About 5 years ago, we had stayed at a couple roadside KOA's with well water and my shower surround in my old TT was orange after two days. I was using an inline filter. Was a real pain to get cleaned up. After sponging it with CLR I started researching filters.

The spun filter does make a difference when the water is rusty. My filter casing is clear and you can see the garbage in the filter.

This is the filter I have been using. Also replaced the shower head with the Oxygenics Body Spa shower head. Wow. What a difference.

There is a lot of great info here. Since we have a 5er, the idea of installing a fixed filter inside the front storage is a great one. I am lazy and agree that adding another step in the setup process with an external filter and hanger doesn't motivate me too much. I thought the comments about the two filter elements or the charcoal elements were very helpful and will be deciding THAT one soon. Thanks again everyone!

Ralph, I put the whole-house type in my unit. What I did to avoid having to hook up hoses all the time was to put "quick-connects" on the filter and the hoses I use. Makes it very easy to set up and take down that way. Also, I carry both silt and carbon charcoal filters. I've been to some campgrounds where the water didn't taste "just right" so I use charcoal there. I am seriously considering adding a second unit, one for filtering silt first, then the charcoal. I would set them up permanently in a heavy duty tote for easier use. JMHO...

I like the tote idea a lot with the quick connects. I can see where the portability is a great asset when moving. I also like the 2 element filter configuration. Will probably get installed this weekend
