Water tank

I bought a 2021 Thor Winport and this is our first trip. Before I left I put bleach and fill the freshwater tank up. Let it set six hours and then flush the freshwater tank three times. The water in our freshwater tank still has an aftertaste. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this?

What bleach/water ratio did you use?

8 ounces bleach into my 40 gallon tank... I pour the bleach into my freshwater hose... then it's flushed into the tank as I fill. Pressurize all the lines, including filling the hot water tank. That sits overnight. Flush 2x then fill. Twice a season.

The water going into my tank gets filtered with Clearsource Premier 2 stage.

Drinking water runs through an additional SimPure 2 stage tankless RO I installed in dead space under the kitchen sink.

We could probably put creek water in our tank with no issues... but I don't.

Overkill?? Maybe. But I got tired of carrying cases of bottled water and/or messing with a Berkey which took up too much space.

Way back in the 60's my mother would mix baking soda with water and add it to the tank after the bleach water was rinsed out. Then pump it thru the lines and let it set overnight then flush. We still do it today

In our boat we used this Camco 40206 Clear Tastepure Drinking Water Freshener for RV Drinking Water Tanks - Walmart.com

It sounds like you used too much bleach. What size tank and how much did you use? I only use one cup of bleach for a 71 gallon tanks (4 oz will work just as well, but bleach is cheap). I run each faucet until I can clearly smell the bleach. I leave overnight and drain the next day. I fill up with water and go. I guess I could drain at least once ( I don't), but draining multiple times seems like overkill to me. Never had an issue with water smell. With that said, we use bottled water for everything we consume including the icemaker. In a pinch or for cooking we would use the water from the fresh water tank, but it is mainly for cleaning, showering, washing hands and toilets, so you can see why filling and draining again to get what little chlorine remnants that may remain makes no sense to me.

Note: The reason, I don't use the water freshener in the RV like we did for boat is because we turn the 71 gallons over inside a week.

Sounds like the filtration system my neighbor built for his aquarium and then asked me why did his fish die. Too clean is not good. Think drinking naturally cold water from a spring. But I admit we pack cases of bottled water, so I can't talk.

Drink bottled water?
Too easy to use bottled water, but there are some.... well the picture says it all.

The "lacks minerals" or "leaches minerals" about RO water is an old wives tale... proven by science. The RO water we drink contains 4 ppm TDS... so literally nothing. If you aren't getting enough vitamins and minerals, your diet is severely lacking. At my age it probably doesn't matter, but I'd rather not drink a chemical stew from unknown water sources. We usually have a few bottles of Propel around for the electrolytes, but to me, buying bottled water is like Eskimos buying snowballs. Kinda like the Pet Rock principle.

We just haven't bothered to put an ro in the rv.

Yes, leaching is bull-roar on less than a nuclear powerplant level.

Pex kinda negates the ro leach argument from any folk except those who won't think.

We don't care much about ro or bottle or muddy creek.
We get by.

We have great "city" water from the Florida Aquaphor UV treated at our local plant and it's great for drinking and cooking.
BUT due to the limestone content it is not great in a coffee maker. So we buy bottled water by the gallon for making coffee and cases of cheap 16.9 fluid ounce bottled water for traveling in the RV due to the convenient size to keep chilled in the fridge and slug down on a hot day when local water sources are of unknown quality.

I use white vinegar to de-odorise. I qt. of that and fill the tank, run thru pipes, let sit 24 hrs, then flush.
How does the flush water smell?? My home water is flitered 3X before it comes out of any faucet-
sediment filter, water softener (KCl, not NaCl) and final 5micron filter for the stuff that got by...

Back to the O.P.'s bleach problem... as was said, keep flushing. You might try filling the tank AND all the plumbing with fresh water and just let it sit overnight. The excess chlorine will probably off-gas into the water and reduce the aftertaste. If it's any consolation, it will eventually wash away with use.

Every few years I buy a new RO membrane for home use. It always comes with a packet of "alternative sanitizing" chemical... which I toss in the trash. Then I sanitize the home RO system (not the membrane or filters) with bleach... same as the motorhome.

Wow it was annoying how he spent almost 3 minutes of his time trying to say that "if you want to use some other products it is okay" His video I think was to make the point that bleach is safe. Not sure who says it is not, but his focus on trying to make sure he did not offend any of the manufacturers that make the crap they can market to the sheep just took away from his message (IMO)

With that said, he confirmed that I can stick with my use of 1 cup bleach although I have 71 gal tank. I know 8 oz / 71 gal is more than enough because it is strong odor coming out the faucets and shower. I was thinking about dropping to 4 oz as I bet it will be just as good if I leave overnight.

I may sanitize tomorrow with 4 oz just to see. I will use my pool tester to see how it reads for chlorine.
