An alternate procedure if you have a built-in water filter with removable filter element canister:
1. Partially drain fresh tank.
2. Turn off water.
3. Bypass hot water heater. Some hot water heaters could be damaged by chlorine.
4. Bypass / turn off Ice makers.
5. Bypass Water softener
6. Remove all filter elements.
7. Put the appropriate amount of bleach with a little water in one filter canister.
8. Replace all canisters with filter elements removed.
9. Engage the tank fill function.
10. Turn on water until tank is full.
11. After tank full switch back to tank draw.
12. Turn on pump.
13. Run water at each station until you smell chlorine from both the hot and cold side.
14. Let sit for 24 hours. I think you can get away with as little as 4 hours.
15. Drain fresh tank.
16. Replace filter(s) reconnect softener.
17. Refill fresh tank keep drain valve open for two or three minuets to flush residual bleach mixture from fresh tank.
18. Turn on pump, run hot and cold at each station until you no longer smell bleach.
19. At this point I'll drain and flush / de-scale the hot water heater. That is a whole different procedure.
