Rt 441 into Gaitlinburg, TN

We are sitting in Murphy, NC and considering heading to Gaitlinburg, TN on Tuesday after the holiday. Rt 441 looks a tad interesting to say the least. Anyone drive it into Gaitlinburg?

It's a gorgeous drive with views to remember. Lots of sharp turns and grades so give yourself lots of time. Better during the week as traffic isn't as bad. If during "leaf season" around October, pack lots of food and water in coach and leave Cherokee with a full tank of fuel. Plenty of pull-offs to rest and let things cool off. If you pull a car or plan to rent one, make sure you do Cades Cove! It's an all day affair but one worth doing. You'll be glad you made the trip!!

Thinking this out, I would grab one of the campgrounds in Cherokee for the night and start off fresh the next day...it's a great drive. Have breakfast at Peter's Pancakes & Waffles while the work traffic gets going...enjoy the day. Lots to see and do crossing over.

Peters is in Cherokee? Gaitlinburg is only listed as 90 miles from where we are in Murphy. Maps say 2 hours but that's not in an RV. We'll just figure on 3 or so hours and take out time from here. Can't check in till 1pm anyways.

Thanks for the response.

If you're going 441 you're going through Cherokee. When running those mountain roads, take the GPS numbers and multiply times 3 or 4. It's a gorgeous drive...do it!!

there may be one tunnel just over the top into TN, but it’s like the BlueRidge parkway - fine for RVs of all sizes - we love it.

You're right...there is a one loop-back tunnel but no issues. Transfer trucks and charter buses use it daily. It's a great stretch of highway to spend a day on. Lots of great scenery and shaded pull-offs for lunch breaks, etc.

I'll agree with Cades Cove, one of the best parts of our Tennessee trip a few years ago.

How was the drive over the mountain on 441? Did you end up going that way?

Yes we did. Drove into Cherokee and then on over 441. The drive was fantastic. The axis drove right on over without a hitch. I put it in tow/haul on the way down and barely touched the brakes the entire way down. It was a great drive. We stopped near the top to have lunch. Traffic was quite light the day after the holiday.
