How'd it over rev?
We've traveled the Appalachian mountains several times pulling a toad using tow/haul mode on descents and never over revved.

The only time we had a misfire code is when a heater hose connection had a small leak that dripped on a spark plug. Replaced the spark plug, fixed the leak and no more problems.

That is the way a rev limiter works. First is shuts off the fuel flow and them it interrupts sparks to random cylinders. If it shut off all sparks and there was remaining fuel in the cylinders or exhaust, when the sparks were resumed there could be a large destructive backfire.

I had it happen twice on tow/haul mode while using cruise. I quit using cruise and just watch the tach. I don't worry so much trying to maintain a consistent speed. I haven't thrown a code in the last 4 years.

thanks for the responses. I agree with the Rev limiter throwing the multiple cyl misfire code.

Hopefully that's it. I can't say I've ever run up against my rev limiter but I have run up against my speed limiter on occasion (mostly while passing trucks playing road blockage games because they are speed limited to 65 mph) and have never got a code because of it. It appears to just shut down the electronic throttle control, not the EFI or spark.

The rev limiter is different from the speed limiter. The rev limiter is there to protect the chain drive to the balance shaft on the left cylinder head. The engine's rev limit is about 5,200 rpm depending on the model year of the engine. The balance shaft operates at twice the crankshafts speed. The speed limiter works of the Hall effect sensor in the transmission's tail shaft and drives the speedometer and odometer.
