One more thought. There may be a breaker in your electrical compartment that provides power to the steps. Since you had a short that breaker may be tripped. It would be a 12v breaker with a yellow flag more than likely. I also think the bird ground should go directly to the chassis and not through a switch - this may be the issue with charging.

Sorry - I just saw this. Im not that familiar with BIRDs since I have a simple isolator relay. Sounds like the BIRF is wired to the relay incorrectly. I found this - lots of PDFs with wiring diagrams. Good luck. Jim
