Mine takes a 15/16ths combo wrench about a foot long. You can then use either end to remove the pug but can only get a quarter turn at a time at the most.

The commercial product we bought in 55 gallon drums called Citrasolv. It is available on Amazon but is a bit pricy. Just spray it on, let it soak, pressure wash it off.
