This happened to me. Mine always ran fine sitting still or on the highway, then it quit while running. I could crank it but it would die as soon as I released the start button.
Took it to a Cummins/ Onan service center. The brushes had arked and ruined the stator. Fortunately it turned out that these generators have a 2 year / 2000 hour warranty (Parts and labor) (3rd year is major components only) I had owned it 23 months. $1400 it would have cost me if it had happened a month later.
BTW generators are generally NOT covered in the extended warranty that CW pressures you to get.
