It's not just the Northeast! Driving home to CA from FL, the roads in Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas were horrible.

Our own CA roads are in general very terrible condition throughout the state.

Orange County in Southern California is the only county in the state that prides itself in budgeting for constant road repair. It's to the point where they will actually tear out perfectly good streets constructed less than 5 years ago in order to cosmetically remodel, (install or remove a different style median), just because it's in the budget, (use it or lose it)!
