The ring separates at the hinge. I used a jeweler's file to clean up the cast pin and the edges. The 3M Exterior mount tape is heavy duty and it's strength maxes in several hours so I let it sit overnight before testing but it seems pretty good. If you have access to a body shop, auto molding tape is the gold standard. Also, I'm not throwing away the old ones.
