They're called holding tanks for a reason. They are intended as a temporary hold... then to be completely and thoroughly flushed. Problems happen when they are not THOROUGHLY flushed, and occasionally sanitized.
Residential septic systems are designed for long term separation of solids and liquid. Liquids are treated with chemicals, and the solids sink - filling the tank... allowing the liquids to filter out into a drainage leach field.
You DO NOT need chemical treatments in your holding tanks. Any surfactant (detergent) will make life easier... the rest is meticulous flushing and rinsing.
