Chipmunk and Diesel leak

Yesterday , I was about to leave on a trip to tour the Great lakes on the US and Canadian sides. After starting the RV, diesel was pouring on the ground.... Under the hood was a chipmunk our squirrel nest under the 2016 Sprinter engine air filter and the rubber hoses were eaten up.

I had to have the rig towed to the garage and the tower disconnected the drive shaft so the transmission would not be damaged. I found that odd and surprised.

Does anybody know if this is really required on a Mercedes Sprinter?

I had to pay 300$ to have the hoses repaired and really would like to avoid this in the future.

Any trick to keep rodent out of the engine compartment and house?

I've heard that moth balls tend to send critters away to find somewhere else to live. Personally, they affect me the same way.

No clue about the drive shaft, but probably a case of better safe than sorry.

Tons of threads on varmits and RV's. Moth balls work great...scatter them around the ground underneath. Tractor Supply sells "Fresh Cab" packets, four to a box. You can place them inside the engine compartment and other areas of ingress. Just remember to remove them before starting engine.

I have no doubt that you'd have to disconnect the driveshaft.
It would have to be put in Neutral; in order to move it at all.
But without the oil circulating: things would overheat quickly!
They told you the right thing!

Mice and squirrels like to gnaw on plastics. Bounce dryer sheets seems to work for me

Are there other sides of the Great Lakes I don’t know about? Can I rv there?

There's always the bottom...
But I doubt your RV is that watertight!

Most of the great lakes have the North side in Canada and the South in the US (Lake Ontario, Erie, Superior and Huron. Very good rv'ing on the lake sides.
