land line to generator problem

My Chateau has a land line that just pulls out and automatically switches to the generator. For the first time today it didn't switch over. Any one familiar with this? How do I fix it?

Thanks for any help

Could you be a little more explicit with your description of everything? The way I'm understanding you-------is, if you unplug the shore power, your generator is suppose to start up automatically?
If that's the case, is there a control panel for the generator where that function can be controlled/setup?

what area of NJ are you in? We used to live in south jersey.... Collingswood, then voorhees, then Blackwood before moving south.

Unfortunately I can't contribute any help on the land line issue, but just wanted to add a welcome from Southern Nevada.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I'm from North Brunswick, center of the State near Rutgers Univ.

Lloyd, the transfer switch just transfers the direction of power from the land line to the generator when you unplug the land line. I can start the generator but i have no power. My circuit breakers are fine as I have power when plugged in.

Did your transfer switch die on you?
I have a standby generator for the house. There is a panel on it that I can set it up to start automatically if the power goes out. Plus I have it set to start once every week at the same time. Called an exercise. Runs for 12 min. and shuts down. Doesn't supply any power to the house during that exercise.
I think if you can find a way to by pass the transfer switch as a test it will help you in your diagnosis. Let us know what you find out.

There is a circuit breaker on the generator. It looks like a switch.

I would locate the transfer switch. It should have a metal cover. Remove the cover and plug the unit in. Check for power on both sides of the switch using a multi-meter set to the proper scale and identify which legs are for 110 power. Than unplug power and start the generator and check again. ln addition to the circuit breaker on the generator, there is also a circuit breaker on the invert-er. Some of the invert-ers have an automatic reset, some you have to push in the breaker to reset it.
