Is This a Spare Tire Mount?

Went down a steep hill that leveled out. I found this underneath. It's a bar mounted perpendicular to the frame and has a long threaded rod hanging from it. Is it a spare tire mount? The end of it touches the electric cord in the pic. Measurements suggest it's long enough to catch and hold a tire and rim.

Thanks

The worst possible kind, but yes, that can mount a spare.
Take a VERY long think before thinking about using it.
And how will you get the dead tire back up there?

Good point. I was wondering about stress capacity. I tow a Ranger. I throw the dead one in the back of the truck

This will seem odd, but I'm not a:
To boldly go where millions have before
Type of guy.
I think everything has an alternative answer. I try to convey that here on the forum.

If I towed a truck I think I'd consider to mount the rv spare on a hitch mount spare carrier on the back of the truck.
It'll look odd, but it'll be right there and the easiest possible access.

I have dealt with an underslung spare. They aren't for the feeble, faint, fearful or those easily pissed off.

If that threaded rod is on the centerline, rear near the hitch
then yes, it probably is part of a spare tire rack 'system'

Mine had a threaded rod welded in place like that
Further forward on the frame left and right, there are metal tabs welded in place with holes drilled through them...(holes drilled side to side)
the three points form a triangle

bolts through the holes in the tabs create the hinge points.
The threaded rod extends through a hole in the flat tab at the point of a triangular frame
Tire sits on the triangular frame and hinges up. Elegantly simple.

I've posted pictures of it before. Don't have it handy at the moment but you can likely find it.

My solution for my Thor Axis 24.1. It tilts down with the removal of one bolt. No welding...all grade 8 bolts and nyloc nuts. Cost me about$100 plus the tire and rimClick image for larger version

Just realize with this setup you've lost a 100+/- lbs of the available hitch/tongue weight if you're towing something plus created a fulcrum with that extension, not sure how that might affect towing.

I haul a 16' fishing boat and occasionally a small trailer...no toads. I would not hesitate to haul a load considering the 3/16" tube wall thickness on the large one and 1/4" tube wall thickness on the 2" tube... but that's me.

That's perfect unless there's snow on the ground or its wet or you can't handle the size or weight of the tire and you don't mind trying to either stuff a blowout up there or let it ride in the rv with you.
I'm not against those at all. They've been around since chariots.
There's one on two of my trucks. I won't take them off and I use them. BECAUSE I AM ABLE.

I just know my audience.
This audience needs to consider their limitations and realize they might not get flat tire service under some condition, somewhere, somehow. They'll be left to their own devices.

It's an audience thing, not a mount placement thing.
That is exactly where, and how, I was putting mine until someone showed me how nice it fits in the rear back drivers bay on a 24.1.
