Hitch Receiver fail on 2020 Hurricane

Didn't know they still made Titanic Steel.

Reciever installed by Thor
Almost lost our tow caddie on 8k / 500 lb receiver with 10k blue ox tow arms. Two months in FL and this happened on way back to NC Can't imagine if it ripped lose on busy interstate. Ebikesare in Tow and no storage rack in our setup.

Having beast of receiver installed along with some frame upgrades done.

I Thank the almighty for sending semi driver James our angle!!

That was my guess.
Last pic the break looks like it has rust forming. Maybe it was cracked for a while before it let go?
We tow a 4200 lb Cherokee on basically the same hitch. I check bolt torque & visually inspect a couple times a year. I'm thinking I need to inspect every time we hook up.

I know it is difficult to be sure from pictures (#2), but you used a drop hitch, when the SUV already appears to be higher than the receiver. Maybe it was to be turned "up"?

Did you take the photo right away or after a time? I ask because that is not a fresh crack. It is rusted like it has been there a while.

Lot of shiney showing when it failed. Did find some rust pits.

His rig connected for towing:

Almost level but the TOAD side is lower even with the drop hitch.

We've had several cases here of hitch failure similar to this failure. I think all had a drop hitch in common. It does apply more down direction torque when braking so if you use a drop hitch (like I and most of us do) that hitch attachment should be inspected frequently, looking hard for those beginning cracks.
