We had a manual awning on our first RV (1998 Itasca Sunflyer) that we replaced with an electric awning. It was money well spent - the manual awning was simply a PITA to open and close and took two people to do it well. The electric awning is great in that it is a press of a button and it will extend or retract. We really like that our Hurricane has an electric awning with a wind sensor that retracts it when it gets any up/down motion that threatens to break it.
As far as the slide "protecting" the awning, that isn't very likely as it is affected more by the wind buffeting around it than by anything else.
If you don't have the wind sensor, it is advisable to retract the awning to prevent any sudden wind gust damage when you are away. We retract ours when we know there are wind gusts forecast, even with the sensor. No sense pressing our luck.
