I think a VW Thing would be a great toad! We've been towing a Manx dune buggy for the last year. It was great until it broke down in Wyoming and I couldn't fix it, then the Jackson shop jacked it all up.
We bought the manual transmission Forester for long trips when we needed reliability, but for local trips the buggy is great! I love the simplicity of the VW tow bar....
