Sure you have oil?
Old caps were a PVC type plastic, subject to UV damage and just cracking.
Clear caps are polycarbonate, much better quality.

If you have oil, level is bottom of hole the rubber plug is in.
Trick with oil is to punch a hole in the center of the rubber cap with a paper clip to allow some venting.
