We have CANARYs for the same reason. However, they do not cost anything to use them (except for what you might pay for WIFI service)
True, if you want more than 24 hours of stored videos and notifications, then you can get a "subscription" that will give you those. However, 24 hours storage of TEMPERATURE notifications, and ACTIVITY notifications, along with being able to see LIVE VIDEO is plenty for us to monitor our four legged kids.
We have had ours almost eight months and haven't spent a penny more than what we paid for it
