I did that before spending the money - Fusion is not flat tow capable according to Ford and the Owners Manual.

got one going, still road dirt on the dolly and car underside are problematic. But the mat works well unless it's raining, them it becomes a pool float.

We're just going to put our little Toad up on a utility trailer...
No laying down in the dirt!
(Unless I happen to have a massive coronary... )

having tugged an enclosed trailer with motorcycles … for many years...we decided, this year, to tow a vehicle, our 'well documented' 20 yr old Jeep TJ ..now ready for cold weather with oem Hart Top !
To answer your question...
Honestly, we never considered renting a vehicle once at a destination..
personal preference

Toad for us. Bought the Cherokee Trailhawk last fall as a toad before we upgraded the MH this spring. We had a smaller 24’ B+ for 12 years and did not have a toad. Breaking camp every time you needed to get groceries, do laundry or sight see got to be a pain. We considered car rental after we bought our ACE but some of the remote National Forest campsites we like make rentals a challenge. The convenience of our own SUV outweighed the initial cost of the 4 down set up to us. As Roy Rogers said “Happy Trails to You” Mark

Question: Is this considered to be a Toad... or a mere Tadpole?

Really? What year? From the 2018 Owners Manual:

Quote:
Recreational Towing
Note: Put your climate control system in
recirculated air mode to prevent exhaust
fumes from entering your vehicle. See
Climate Control (page 119).
Follow these guidelines if you have a need
for recreational (RV) towing. An example
of recreational towing would be towing
your vehicle behind a motorhome. These
guidelines are designed to ensure that your
transmission is not damaged.
Your vehicle can be towed with all four
wheels on the ground using the Neutral
Tow feature, or with all four wheels off the
ground using a vehicle transport trailer. If
you are using a vehicle transport trailer,
follow the instruction specified by the
equipment provider.
Neutral Tow
If you tow your vehicle with all four wheels
on the ground:
• Tow only in the forward direction.
• Release the parking brake.
• Place the vehicle in Neutral Tow mode
by doing the following:
• Put the ignition in accessory mode
(ignition on, engine off). See
Keyless Starting (page 141).
• Select the neutral tow option in the
information display.
• When prompted by the information
display, press the brake pedal and
select Neutral on the transmission.
Make sure the parking brake is off.
If done successfully, a confirmation
message appears in the display.
• Shut the ignition off. See Keyless
Starting (page 141). If the process
is completed successfully, the N on
the transmission slowly blinks and
a confirmation message appears
in the display.
• Do not exceed 70 mph (113 km/h).
• Start the engine and allow it to run for
one minute at the beginning of each
day. With the engine running and your
foot on the brake, shift into position D
and then into position R before shifting
back into position N.

Since we are still working and the longest trip was 30 days in our Axis 25.5 we have been fairly lucky to use Uber/Lyft or rent a car. Only had 1 instance where we couldn't rent a car as it was Sunday (small town) and we were just staying overnight at a Walmart. No big deal just found other things to do. We just enjoy the journey & don't worry too much about the details. There's enough of that waiting for us back at the home front.

Older fusions are not flat towable. That was why I bought a dolly.
