I came across something like this back in the 80's for for the life of me I dont remember what cause it. I think I had to add a ground wire to something that I added to the car?
Check your wires going to that sub fuse box you installed. Perhaps add extra ground to the frame?
Let us know what you figure out.

Thanks for the reply. Good thinking re: the grounds. It's the goofy-ist thing I've seen, but it will take a while to get back to this one...gotta go camping!
