Checking the winds

Sitting here listening to the winds whistling around the house and having an, um, moment. How do you check the winds direction and/or speed while driving down the road? I see and hear the horror stories about blown over rigs due to the winds. I know that I usually check the weather apps. I am used to pulling a tall 5th wheel toy hauler and a little bit more cognizant of the winds. Plus gaining the experience of almost having an OMG moment with turning into high crosswinds.

An app called windy.

I caught a national tv network using it as proofs.
It is becoming the westher authority.
It has very very good wind speed/direction/projection maps.

A local instant wind the size of an acre or two is never going to be predicted by anything other than treetops and dust pattern instantly visible to you.

I just head to the nearest Camping World or Gander RV and look at their flag:

From when I was involved in such things
I have a remembrance of a scale chart showing how to gauge wind speed by flag angle/size.

Anyone know the scale?

You can get wind reports with weather channels, watch the side of the road, grass, tree leaves, trash, etc.. gusts out of nowhere are hard to spot..try not to travel on very windy days, it kills your MPG and arms trying to hold the rig on the road..

Ventusky is a great source to look at what is around you and what you might be headed into

We travel mostly I70-I80-I90 so we have seen our share of rigs blown over, mostly large reefers or vans and only a few campers. Only one motor home and the rest travel trailers or 5th wheels as RV's go

Try very hard to avoid anything over 40 mph that might be gusting and will sit it out or change directions to do that

Never driven in wind that caused me concerns but unless you have to get to the bank to get a million dollar check I'd stay put till things calm down. Not worth getting blown into someone or someone getting blown into you-----RIGHT!!!!
