Extended warranty

Hello
We are in the process of buy a new lc26 and would like some thoughts from others if adding the extended warranty is worth the cost. Im not to keen on them ,especially adding it to the finance cost.i estimate we will probably use it about 15,000 miles per year or less
Forum member thoughts are very important to me.

Not only is it not worth the cost, it is not worth the aggravation to file a claim.

Put the extended warranty "cost" in an interest bearing account or mutual/index fund and draw from it if needed to repair items out of warranty over the years. You will probably come out ahead.

Skip all warranties and add-ons at the dealer. After the purchase if you think one of the offers may be useful to your situation, research the benefits versus the negatives. If you find the offering is worth your time then shop around and get it at a good price. You will save a ton of money in the long run. Dealerships make a lot of their profits by selling these add-ons. They get them from the providers add a hefty markup then you finance them with your coach for the term of the loan. Everyone in the deal makes a ton of money and you get stuck with the bill. As another poster said, save for your own non-warranty repairs. A small percentage of the purchase price put aside every month will create a nice fund for future repairs.

20% profit to the company selling the warranty and 20$ of the selling price to the dealer. If you buy it direct, the company assumes to make a prophet of 35%. I don't know of a company that expects to loose money. It is not anything like the collision or comprehensive part of your coach's insurance policy. Because the independent insurance company pays a reduced rate from the repair places usual rates, you automatically go and stay at the end of the line, right after factory warranty repairs. Paying cash (not a credit card) will move you to the front of the repair line.

First and foremost they are NOT warranties. What you were offered was an Extended Service Plan, or an insurance polity for a future break down. More hoops to jump through than a three ring circus, more limitations than a politicians honesty. Buying an ESP means that you don't believe the product is any good and you expect it to fail. Perhaps with a thor product that feeling is justified, but still a horrid waste of money. Every RV manufacturer bets that the original owner will not use it much and any defects that appear will be after that original warranty expires. Then you can try to exercise that ESP and the hoops it has. Me?? I self insure the maintenance aspects of vehicle ownership.

That is a very valid point of view - and one with which I agree. But it is an opinion, not a fact. For a great many people the piece of mind offered by a service agreement is well worth the cost. And while it’s certainly true that they can be hugely difficult to use and that most people won’t recover the cost they CAN be very helpful with catastrophic failures. I don’t have a policy but I’ve had an A/C unit, a water heater and a slide failure repaired at the factory service center. All of them would have been covered by Good Sam if I’d had it (per the service writer). My out of pocket for these three repairs was about the same as the cost of a seven year plan. You pay your money and you take your chances.

Just read the contract carefully and know that the most prevalent and frustrating issues - like leaks - won’t be covered.

Peace of mind is valid and important. With my previous Itasca DP I got no service records with it. I got the GS 2 year house and chassis as my "break down insurance". It did cover a few items, nothing major. After 2 years of good usage, servicing all systems, I had a track history and didn't renew the ESP. It didn't pay out for repairs that exceeded the policy cost but most insurance doesn't anyway.

When I got the Thor Omni I negotiated a GS "house only" policy because I didn't have confidence that thor was any good. Justified in my opinion. I'll get most of that back when I cancel it later today. I didn't get one with the Valencia since I have confidence it was better built and I'll use it to prove it.

EDIT note; the Valencia selling dealer offered but didn't push the ESP. Big difference from what I've experienced at "the big boys".

I may be the exception. Bought 2014 34F new. We bought $3,200 warranty. The warranty expired and total warranty work, $000.00 deductible, came in at $9,300! Glad I bought it!

Almost all financial advisor will tell you to never buy an extended warranty on anything to include a house. The buyer almost never comes out on top. The small print in the "warranty" excludes many of the things that break. Yes, some people have beat the odds, but just like the one arm bandit at the casino, the house will win in the long run.

We’ll sure. They couldn’t stay in business if they didn’t charge more than they pay out. A person considering a plan isn’t much concerned with the company’s “odds”. Their only interest is the “what if’s” in their own life. Do you have life insurance?

It's just a bet.
$5,000 cost against a potential $15,000 engine.
At best(worst) it pays 3:1

If you have $15,000 disposable, don't.
If you're scraping by and $15,000 would ruin you, do.

Broke? Yes.
Cash wealthy? No.

It's pretty easy.

And
Some people read the Damn contract in its entirety before signing.

Actually, Pete, I do not have life insurance. I did when I was young and had a family, but I don't now. If I was strapped for cash and buying an RV, then the best thing for me to do would be to get in the pickup and head for home.

An RV is a bad, bad, bad investment that should never be undertaken by anyone who has to make payments. Its just not a wise financial decision for the long run -- neither is a boat, hunting, fishing, airplane, or atv. Don't do it! Save your money for when for when you are older, the kids are grown, and you can afford to pay cash for your toys. If you have to live from month-to-month, paycheck-to-paycheck, then you are doing something wrong.

If you think the kids will miss all the "camping experiences", then buy a tent and let them know what real camping is.

Useless
Use some discipline and save the anticipated repair money before you need it so you don't have to spend it when you don't have it.

OMG, I have owned 5 boats, and airplane, a Porsche, and now my second RV. If we didn't have these toys, what would we do, watch FOX news all of the time?
