Bounce sheets repel mice...

Ziptie copious amounts of BOUNCE softener sheets to the engine compartment. Your problem will be solved... I do it to any vehicle I park outside.

Peppermint oil soaked cotton balls also work really well.

Mostly likely a squirrel nest. Have seen similar here. Mice tend to leave droppings and urine stains. Squirrels are cleaner but much more destructive. They ate wires off the gas tank on 1 Rv and the taillight wires on another. Soy wiring is food.
I had a squirrel nest on top of a Ford 460 that covered the whole RV engine.
I have had good results with "Fresh Cab" - seems to keep squirrels and mice away. Others have mixed results with it.
Penguins have not been a problem since my last trip to Antarctica

Might want to investigate inside the air cleaner/filter housing as well. We have wrens that like to build in isolated cavities.

Wrap a few moth balls in cheese cloth. Place them in the engine compartment and all the storage lockers. Keeps out mice squirrels etc.

Hummmmm; something very similar was in my 2015 Volvo XC-60 SUV when a tech replaced a coolant tube. My guess was squirrels???

Moth balls will keep critters, neighbors & most everyone else away! THEY STINK!
I've had good luck with the Fresh Cab placed under the hood, in the storage compartments, under drawers/cabinets inside & they smell good like some of the scented poppouri pouches.

Chipmunk nest.

Threat them as you would a mouse.
