We've been up and down the Icefields Parkway (between Banff and Jasper) many times. Our daughter lives in Calgary - so that route is one of our ways to get back and forth to see her.
The trip is beautiful. Don't be in a hurry. There are always some who don't seem to know what a solid white line means. The highway has been good shape.
We've only camped on that route once - when a fatal accident closed the highway for about 10 hours. We just wanted a place to sleep. (As I said - don't be in a big hurry. You can have delays. Put the coffee on. Cook something. And invite the rest in the line up to join you for a picnic. They'll love you.) There are quite a few campgrounds - some with services but most without.
One stop we always make - the Columbia Icefields. Over the years (close to 25 years), the glacier has receded. Now, it's a good hike to get to it. (There's always buses! We just about did that last year.)
It's not a long drive - 3 to 4 hours from Banff to Jasper. You'll be sleeping in some of the most spectacular country on this planet.

Check out Tunnel Mountain Village II in Banff. Especially if you are towing a toad. Easy parking. No disconnecting the tow vehicle. Mountain Village I is probably older, and spaces are tighter there. We never had reservations and Mountain Village II has had openings.
Ideally located if you are about to enter the park northbound or if you are southbound ending your drive thru the park.

I would suggest staying on the edge of the park in Kananaskis… less busy and in my opinion more beautiful… but less touristy so less shopping if that is what you are in to.

Kananaskis has lots of campgrounds you book via Alberta Parks reservations on a 30 day booking outlook.

Also worth a drive in May-Sep from Banff to Radium. Better hot springs than Banff and is in Kootenay National Park… you can stay at Red Streak.

Jasper is great too and good sites near Saskatchewan River Crossing which is close to the Athabasca Glacier where the bus drives on the ice.
