Not sure if it's the same problem as yours, but my step motor would partially retract and then the motor would start "grinding" and I had to manually push the steps back in the rest of the way. I called Thor Customer Service - they shipped out a new motor the same day and I received it less than 24 hours later at no cost (under warranty). It was a quick 10 minute job (3 bolts) for me to replace the motor and send the defective one back using the prepaid mailing label Thor sent me. No trip to the dealer for me - very simple fix.
