Oops!! Better trade for a 2014 or older 4wd Honda CRV or similar. Avoid CVT (continuously variable transmission) on ANY car even if 4wd.
For your sanity - get online and read a downloadable operators manual for any car you plan on dinghy towing. There are differences between model years of the SAME vehicle... so plan carefully - and do your homework!!
Good luck, and safe travels!

So who gave you this quote since Blue Ox doesn't even make a baseplate to fit a 2005 Equinox?

They didn't say they'd install the CORRECT one... just that they'd install one!
Seriously though, there isn't that much difference in price within the Blue Ox line of base plates... the main difference is obviously the bracket/mounting holes configuration and width, which maybe affects the price $50. Even options like removeable tabs only add tops $100. When considering a $4k purchase/install... $100 isn't much of a game changer.

Why would you pay 4500.00 to add a towing system to a car worth about 4500.00?
Just use that money to buy a different car that's manual and easy to tow.

Not all manuals are flat towable. Just ask Subaru

Correct. It depends on how they're lubricated. If they depend on the countershaft to spread the oil and the countershaft doesn't rotate in neutral a manual transmission can burn up dry bearings just like an automatic can that is not designed to be flat towed.

I think the point here is that the car is not towable, NOT the intrinsic dollar value of the car. IF that car WERE towable AND in excellent shape, low miles, etc. - the dollar value is pointless. That said, adding a "$4,500 towing setup" to a car that's NOT towable? Foolish indeed!

The guide I like to reference does not list the 2005 Equinox as being flat towable.

Whew!
I just saw this post and thought maybe I had misread the owner's manual on a 2014 AWD Equinox which I am about to buy. Turns out that you *can* tow a 2014! Had me a little worried for a moment.

We just purchased a 2014 Equinox 2WD for flat towing, and the owner’s manual procedure for doing so matches that listed in the Good Sam 2014 Dinghy Towing Guide exactly.

I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is flat towed with the blue ox tow bar, base plate, brake system, light bar and a barrier system so my car is not damaged from debris thrown from the MH tires/road. Total cost around $5000. That being said I would only spend that much if I was not planning on ever towing any thing else. These are hopefully my forever vehicles. We drive a 2018 Thor Fourwinds 28z. Best wishes for choosing what works best for you!

Brake system for new toad?
What braking system is being used by you all? I just bought a 2022 Chevy Trailblazer and am looking for suggestions and/or advice and experience on braking systems that are being used by members of this great community. I will be using the blue ox tow bar and baseplate.

We have the Demco Stay In Play in our Jeep. 95% of it is under the hood. The only parts inside are a small box with a toggle switch, and a small cylinder attached to the brake pedal. All we need do when it's time to tow is flip that toggle switch. No bulky stuff to install/remove/store.

Stick with Blue Ox Patriot
A couple of GOOD things about Blue Ox.
When ours was 3 or 4 yrs old we started getting an error code, called and they said send it in. Got it back with new software, claw and battery + we only paid shipping
The best thing about a portable, we're talking about a new toad, it'll be JUST as easy to install in our 3rd toad as it was the 1st and second
