Yes. Banks often put a $1 charge on the card on the initial swipe to verify the cards legitimacy. Once the purchase is completed the actual amount of the purchase is charged to the account and the hold is reversed. The banks are allowed to "hold" for 24 hours. This happens with credit cards as well but you don't see it like you do on your debit card.
