Limits vary by card type (if business is wanting the fraud guarantee from the card provider)... AMEX tends to be higher than MC/Visa... Worked well for me when Costco used AMEX with 5% back...
You can also go inside and 'prepay' with card to any amount you want... If you end up under, go back in and they will refund/credit difference.
Typically my cards will allow 2 swipes.... The third if needed (thankfully not often, but when gas was at/near $4) typically rejected and needed another card.
Have occasionally had to answer 'fraud alert' texts, then reprocess too.
I rarely if ever use debit for purchases... And never at a gas pump.
Protected transaction, yes... PIA if skimmed/fraud, most definitely.
