We've traveled the last 10 years & unless we were headed to a popular summer vacation destination (which we tried to avoid) I called a day or 2 in advance & so far have always been accommodated. Usually tried to arrive on Weds or Thurs & stay through the weekend so we weren't trying to get a spot on Fri or Sat, you can nearly always get in on Sun, Mon, or Tues just about everywhere. The popular spots, if your able, plan to go before schools are out, say late May or after schools start, about the 1st of Sept, the weather is usually nice both of those times & usually not as crowded.
