I was always told to unhook the Negative to keep from accidently causing a short to ground with the wrench. I learned the hard way to pay attention to where your wrench is when I was trying to unhook a large battery in an old army bus we had at work. It resulted in an arc that melted half way through my wrench before I could get it off.
