If by bikes you mean the kind you also pedal, we’ve taken beater mountain bikes with us on trips out west on various occasions. I have a DIY rack that supports two bikes by fork and rear wheel behind van. Once bikes are off I can open rear doors.

We’ve also taken our inexpensive Cannondale tandem out west but only behind motorhomes (it’s a bit long to carry behind the van). I have a custom made rack (had it fabricated out of stainless) that bolts to RV square bumpers. Can also carry two bikes as long as wheelbases are close (i.e. — can’t do a tandem and single bike at same time unless I rigged something for single’s rear wheel which I haven’t had the need).

We like beater bikes so we don’t have to worry about theft, protecting them as much from weather, road dirt, etc. I normally just cover saddles and shifters with plastic bags.
